No Serial Number on the Headstock

I picked up a Mark V with out a motor for $25. Yes it needs a lot of work. I just bought a complete headstock and the place for the serial number is blank. Any ideas?

Pictures would really help us determine what you brought. Simple to do. Click on the paper click, enter the picture location and when all the pictures are included, click on the paper click again. The serial number for the Mark V is on a round plate on the belt housing.

With no SN, the only we can help you is by seeing just what you do have. That said, the headstock is one of a very few versions. More important is its condition.

The first clue will be what color is it painted(assuming original paint).

If it is a 'later' vintage one.

The serial number, on the machines with which I have any experience, is stamped into the Vent Plate (514471). A vent plate can be ordered as a replacement part but it will have nothing embossed upon it (thus no serial number). So......

The 'later' ones had an adhesive sticker placed above the vent plate with a rubber(?) stamped date similar to SPT's.

Unfortunately solvents are quite effective in removing the date!:(

P.S. How many airborne icons do you have. Since the 'current' one has crossed sabers(cavalry type) do they air drop horses? ;>}

They do air drop horses - at least the horses that the Cavalry rides now a days.

I did not know that the crossed sabers were indicative of the Cavalry.

Britton is assigned to US Army Alaska, 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division. Wow, that's a mouth full. Back when I was in the service, you needed to state that information along with your serial number before the pay master would give you your monthly stipend. I might not have ever gotten paid.
