Hello,

I am new to woodworking. Does anyone know how Nick set up the lathe tool rest on the powerstation ? It was hard to see during the webcast.

Hi Brad,

I believe he made a jig for the std SS toolrest to fit in. If you look at this site, http://www.shopsmithacademy.com/SS_Archives/SS108_Turning_Pens.htm , and put your curser over the "5" on the "Blackboard" you will see it. If you scroll your screen all the way over so you can see the far right side , then scroll the blackboard down all the way, you will see a downloadable set of .pdf plans for that jig. Good luck:D .

I too am confused as to how this tool rest holder attaches to the power stand. I think some further details must be given to explain this. My guess is that some hardware must also be added....like a 3/8" bolt to go thru the
3/8" hole on the end of the side view which would tighten the tool rest inserted in the 1 1/4" hole on the top view???? Nick???

I haven't built this yet so I am not sure. However, I believe the hole that you reference is for a bolt to be used to tighten the tool rest in place.

On the other end you see a slot, 3 1/2" long x 3/8". I'd bet that this is for hardware (bolt/nut/washer) to secure the mount to the Power Station. The slot permits adjustment.

However, when I lay this out, it appears to me that Nick either used special hardware to grasp the edge of the Power Station OR he had holes drilled to accomodate these mounting bolts. I'm going for special hardware. (News at eleven.)

I couldn't wait 'til eleven. I went out to the shed and found these. If my concept doesn't get shot down, they should work just fine. Been carrying these for years & years. Use to hold a bicycle rack on the rear bumper of a travel trailer. Excuse the photo quality please.

Pause the viewing at some time between 12:33 and 12:37 and you see very clearly the use of mounting hardware. I'd say, a 3/8" carriage bolt about 2 1/2" long, a flat washer and a 3/8" locking nut (nylon insert). Same configuration on the other end except the bolt has to be 4" long and may not be a carriage bolt.

Used the bolt holes already drilled in the Power Sta...Wait a minute! The new Power Stations don't have these bolt holes. I have an older PS here in the Academy, left over from the days when we still made the Crafter's Station. There was some sort of a bracket bolted to the Crafter's Station to hold the table. Shopsmith must have stopped drilling the bolt holes after they dropped the Crafter's Station.

Can't do it tonight, but in the next few days I'll prepare another page for the PDF that tells where to drill the bolt holes and what bolts to use.

I was wondering if there was any further follow up on attaching the tool holder to the Power Station. I was planning to set this rig up and try some pen making........Thanks.

I just visited the Sawdust Session referenced in this thread and noticed that there are some Special Discount Offerings posted there. I checked a couple of the others and found still other offerings.

DO THESE SPECIAL OFFERINGS HAVE AN EXPIRATION DATE? iF SO, WHAT IS IT?

If they do expire, should they still be on the blackboard?
