power coupler for jointer

I recently purchased a 1962 Shopsmith with Magna jointer. I am very pleased with the purchase however am unable to use the jointer due to lack of the proper power coupler. The lower auxillary shaft on my headstock is 1/2" and all the drive couplers included are 5/8". I called and ordered a coupling kit and was assured that the 1/2" headstock drive coupler would be included. It was not. I suspect that the shaft size has changed over the years. Can anyone tell me the part number for the smaller shaft couple rand how I can get one quickly? I have a need and would really like to be able to square up.
Thanks in advance.

The info I have is that the jointer hub is 503572. This is from "SPT coupling kit set up instructions" PL-380 revised 5/81. That is pretty old info but I
doubt it has changed. Maybe that hub is no longer included in the coupler
kit. Call customer service and find out then let us know what they say for
future reference.
Benn there but did this

I had done the same thing buying used. I called shopsmith 800 number and ordered the 1/2" headstock coupler hub!!! yep they are called hubs that attach to the spindles on the headstock and the accessories. Make sure you have the hubs for the jointer it needs one on it also. Mine were already on the jointer. They were real nice and knew exactly what I needed. Sorry I don't remember the part number.

I just looked at the lastest coupler kit on the SS website. It only includes
2 hubs now rather than the 4 hubs included in the "old days". You will have to order a jointer hub seperately from the coupler kit. Sorry about my confusion. Us "old guys" sometimes aren't quite up to date. From what I can
tell the 503572 is a good part number for that hub.
Thank you

Thank you to all of you for the replies. It's good to know that there is so much help out there. The part number you supplied is different than the one in the kit, so I assume it is the correct one. I did find a parts manual form 1961 in the stuff that came with it and the picture does show the old coupler kit having four hubs in it. But of course the part numbers are not valid. I do in fact have the hub on the joiner end. I just need the one that goes on the headstock. Thanks again to all. I appreciate it. I'm pretty good at figuring things out but I am a newbie and will probably have more questions. Love my Shopsmith !

Hi,
I have also recently lucked into a spare Magna jointer that's 50 years old. I noted the previous owner was trying to run it on a Mk. V 500.... but having only "straight pipe" mounts for the jointer. He was frustrated with offset at the power coupler. I just got the correct eccentric mounting stubs (and new blades) from Shopsmith and the jointer is now running like a new one.
Enjoy,
Thanks

Your encouragement is appreciated. I emailed Shopsmith tech support and got a reply and will call them Monday to see if I can get the numbers for what I need. I am anxious to get my jointer going. Age is not a problem with a well built piece of machinery like that. I wish that I could say that it is older than I am but alas it is not. The Shopsmith with the jointer on the end is a sweet combination or at least it will be when I can use it.

The order number for the hub set that you need to power the jointer and our old jigsaw is #503572, as Audir10 indicated above.
With all good wishes,

Update to my coupling problem.....the 503572 part number is the 5 spline hub with a 1/2" shaft hole that goes on the jointer side if the coupler. I already have that one installed. Tech support gave me the number for the 4 spline drive hub for the headstock however when it arrived it is the same one that is in the coupler kit and has a 5/8" shaft hole. Tech support told me that is the only drive hub and it is called an idler drive hub. They told me to put it on the 1/2" shaft and hog it down and it will run. It does in fact run but of course the hub spins a bit off center. It makes me uncomfortable to run it that way even though tech support told me too. That puts all the torque on the setscrew and the back half of the drive hub that contacts the shaft. In such a finely crafted and engineered machine it seems incredulous that it would be designed to run this way. I am able to square up lumber and am therefore happy. I still am pursuing an answer to this anomoly though. It would seem to be a safety issue, especially since the jointer shaft is a higher speed one. A bushing or an adapter to take the 1/2" shaft to 5/8" would seem to be called for. I know I am a pain in the neck for making an issue of this however it is a loose end for me and I would like to clear it. It does not affect my opinion of the Shopsmith, I still love it. and am making plenty of sawdust

i am confused by your problem. i have five shopsmiths here, two are 1954 models, one is a 1963 model, a 1984 model and a 1989 model. every shaft on all headstocks measure 5/8 inch in diameter. i can only assume that if your headstock has a 1/2 inch diameter shaft on the idler shaft that someone must have altered it after it left the shopsmith factory. i suggest you measure it carefully with calipers or even better yet a micrometer. if it indeed measures .500 you have a pretty easy fix with a steel bushing that is available at most hardware stores. you would need to measure and drill a 11/32 inch hole for the set screw to pass through and tighten securely on the idler shaft. if the idler shaft measures something other than 1/2 inch it will be necesary to replace the idler shaft which is available through shopsmith. i hope this informatiom helps, bob
