New Shopsmith 520
Just bought a used shopsmith Mark V Model 520 to go with my Model 500. 520 upgrade looks complete but the mechanical skills of the person that had it before me is questionable.
Looks like the plastic drive assembly as been driven into the quill. (Quill pics 1 & 2) There is one still on the unit so this is another one.
The motor tray has been put onto the headstock with incorrect screws and is actually missing one of the screws. Motor tray is very loose. See pic of headstock
it doesn't appear that the rails have not been attached to the main table correctly. The middle screws are not there and they do not line up with the holes that are in the table. Are they just reversed???? See pic of main table.
Also can anybody recognize this unknow part????
Thanks,

It may look like one, but I don't think it is. See the square nit like projection on the right end.heathicus wrote:That unknown part looks like a 520 saw Arbor.

it doesn't appear that the rails have not been attached to the main table correctly. The middle screws are not there and they do not line up with the holes that are in the table. Are they just reversed???? See pic of main table. You may have an early 510 table. They had tapped holes and the center one was located differently. If so, the PO would have had to drill the center holes from scratch. The outer holes only needed the threads drilled out.
Also can anybody recognize this unknow part????
Thanks,
5/8" arbor for sure.
IIWM, a thorough inspection of everything would be done. No telling what else has been screwed up!

I knew there was a difference in the 520 arbor but had never seen a picture of one before. Now I know! Thanks!
Anybody know the best way to get the plastic part out of the quill??? Are they easy to take apart. I have replaced them in the headstock but never took one apart. Need to order the correct replacement screws from shopsmith. Also missing a couple of screws where the legs attach to the unit that I need to replace.
Anybody have any advice on the rails on the main table???
Thanks

I did'nt see the screws that you were talking about but any sheet metal type screw that engages the tinnerman clips will work provided that they sre no too long. Your unknown part is a 5/8 inch sawblade arbor. It sure looks like that part of a plastic drive sleeve is inside of the quill housing. Don't know how that can happen. Didn't think there was enough room to do that and have a functioning quill. Wonder if the PO cut a nylon drive sleeve down to use to stabilize the rear of the quill, but an original 520 would have had a two bearing quill to begin with. Remove the quill shaft from the quill housing and remove the plastic piece and check the bearings and if they are good put the quill back together and continue refurbing. It looks like the table and the 520 rails were different versions. The 520 upgrade kits were sold in two versions, one for an earlier table and one for a later version. I know because my upgrade was sent for the different version that I did not have and this resulted in having one extra hole in the main table rails. No harm done except that I have one empty hole in the rail.

The rails are not reversed. Are you sure the middle screw does not line up. The previous owner may not have installed it because of the rear trunnion.aloibl wrote:Just bought a used shopsmith Mark V Model 520 to go with my Model 500. 520 upgrade looks complete but the mechanical skills of the person that had it before me is questionable.
