My first bowl...

Wow, love the color, the only thing I ever turned was a set of salt and pepper shakers back in wood shop in Junior High. I twas pretty basic stuff and if I remember correctly, it was not exactly pretty, but hey that was more than 30 years ago. Looking forward to trying to learn the basic all over once I get my Mark V.

Since this thread, I've traveled to the dark side...literally...and turned two more bowls. A cherry wood "crock" style with thick walls and a wenge bowl in the same form as the paduak. Quite frankly, the wenge bowl is beautiful.

Very nicely done....I'm inspired by your work. I really like the cherry one! Your wife is spot on...you do have a knack for them!

I'd love to try one myself but I have always been intimidated by the cost of the blank... which is why I've often thought of doing a segmented bowl.

If you don't mind my asking... how much $ do you have invested in each of the 3 bowls?

I have $25 in both the cherry and paduak and $35 in the wenge. I guess they were a bit pricey at the time, but the result justifies the expense. I have another paduak blank yet to turn and some of the 30,000 year old stuff...whose name escapes me at the moment.

I'm thinking small finger bowl for the old stuff...:rolleyes:

Turning is very satisfying IMHO and my favorite use for my SS.

Funny, I bought it at Heartville Hardware here in NE Ohio. The pladce is run by Menonites who believe the earth is only 6,000 or so years old. I told the clerk that the little sticker told the story if the wood and the age of it...and if the sticker was a lie to them, then why was the wood so damn much? :confused:

He had no reply...but he did take my money.

I do not wish to seem negative or angry however as a Mennonite myself feel a bit as though your impression may be painting either the wrong people or an entire religious group as uneducated. Most of the Mennonites I know are better educated and informed than any other single group of people. Again I have no desire to insult you yet would prefer you use a bit of care in whom or how you represent others. Jim

Hartville Hardware is owned and operated by two brothers who are Mennonite, along with Hartville Kitchen and Hartville Flea Market.

The "Hardware" is 285,000 square feet of...everything you can think of.

Thank you for clarifying that the Hartville owners clearly are doing many things right and must be of at least average intelligence. I wonder how many of those participating in this forum can claim such a high level of accomplishment? Certainly I would never be able to you. Now that the apologies are 'past', what about the alleged age of that wood? Who really knows?

Unless the 'clerk' was one of the owners or himself a Mennonite he would have neither understanding of yer comment nor any reason to react to it.

If he be still damp betw...behind the ears he would not react to anything not directly concerned with 'clerking'(ringing it up and handling money and maybe bagging it).

Yes I am generalizing here lest anyone having a teenager get riled over me casting a broad net over them folks with damp ears. If'n der shoe fits. . . . If not disregard it.

Very nice, beautiful color and looks substantial enough to bear daily use without being clunky.

My first bowl is still on the lathe, all I need to do is hollow it out.
