I find that when the Gilmer clutch set screw does not line up with the flat on the end of the drive sleeve, the set screw has become loosen. I would align the set screw with the flat and see how easy it is to slip the clutch. I try for 12 to 16 pds of torque to slip the clutch. You want to make sure the Gilmer belt is riding at least a 1/16" or more off the back edge of the clutch teeth. I sometimes have to move the idler shaft bearing within the eccentric bushing to achieve this clearance.

Hi Guys,

Got a color question for you. My old '55 greenie has what appears to be red orange paint on the speed control dial, the sawdust port cover and the vent plate. However, the refurbished speed control handle is bright red.

The paint does not appear to have faded as it is still bright and saturated. Was the original color the red orange? If so, does anyone know what the color match would be?

I would say faded. Red paint does that!

Hi JPG, I thought so too, but generally red paint fades to pink not orange. The pigment does not usually change hue just loses saturation. If red paint is not stored where it sees direct sunlight, it will stay pretty red. Interesting.

In looking at several Greenie restorations I've seen this same red orange color. Does anyone have any experience with this color fade or shift?

Hi Fellas,

I guess what I'm asking is what to do? Everything is basically red orange accept the new speed control handle. The vent plate would be the hardest to re-paint as it looks to have been silk screened. The Speed control dial and sawdust port cover wouldn't be too bad to re-paint though. However, it would be a lot simpler if I just re-painted the speed control handle in the same red-orange. What are your thoughts gentlemen?

I checked the colors on my Shopsmith equipment against your photos, and most of my red parts look a bit less dark than your new speed control handle. None of them have the orange cast, except for one table insert, I think from eBay. However, my machines are either older (10E/R's), or are fairly new, and all are of the gray persuasion.

Here's a Greenie that was professionally restored by Skip at MKC tools. It appears to have red-orange paint on those parts. If it were me, I'd keep the original parts original, and paint the new control to match.

Edit: Here's another Greenie, which appears to be in original condition, with red paint that looks similar to your original parts.
