I was puzzled as to it's disappearance too.
It didn't look like something I would do, so I didn't pay close attention. I recall, he found that the outer edges of the paper on the sanding disks could lift off a bit, sawdust would get underneath, and then the edge wouldn't stick down again.
For the conical disk he made a matching conical depression in a board and lined it with something soft, like shelf liner, same but flat for the flat disks,
and stored the disks face down, with weights on them, to keep pressure on them while stored so the adhesive maintained contact.
