I made this box as a gift for my friend Linn from the Darbin Orvar channel. We made plans to drive down to Corvallis to meet with Linn and her husband Matt, and I decided to make this wooden box for them as a gift. I used some tropical hardwood for the sides (I think it was Ipe), and cherry wood for the top and bottom. The liner was Paduk.
I only had a few days to make it, so I worked up until the last minute. I did what I could to save time, and ran into trouble fighting the clock on glue dry time. I clamped for the minimum required time, in a somewhat cold shop, and then used my disk sander on it. The joint opened up a bit, and I quickly injected some glue and reclamped. I usually clamp for way longer than the recommended time, but was curious about how far you could push it. I learned a lesson, and probably won’t do that again.
Even though I didn’t have time to put a finish on it, the project came out great. I was proud to give it to Linn and Matt.
