I found some information on addonchat's site. It's possible that your web browser has downloaded/cached an invalid copy of thier chat software. Try emptying your Temporary Internet Files, then closing your web browser, and trying again. If this doesn't work, I will see what else I can find out.

I've done all of that but it didn't improve matters.
I think I've captured a way to show what is really happening at my terminal. If this loads on your computer, BE PATIENT, let it play out to the login screen. When you get the screen - login.

To Dusty and others: Addon Chat is slower to load than our previous software. Depending on the Internet traffic between your computer, our server, and theirs, it may take a considerably longer time. If you're getting the white place-keeper for the chat room, be patient. Give it a few minutes to load. Once your computer has cached a copy of the java script, it shouldn't take nearly as long the second time.
If you continue to have trouble, I suggest you visit Addon Chat's web site at
http://www.addonchat.com/demo.html and poke around. As Doug points out, they offer troubleshooting advice on their site.
As for the grumbling about add-ins, the free Sawdust Sessions that Shopsmith web-casts would never have been possible without add-ins that expand your browser capabilities. To continue to upgrade that service and remain a useful part of your lives, we may ask our viewers to upgrade their browsers from time to time with free software. Sorry to be such a pain in the ass -- but at least we're a free pain in the ass.

I successfully gained access to the chat room. Before I tried, I updated all the relevant free software programs on my computer. There is a problem, however:
On Nick's video, he explains that there is a box that says "guest" with a number, and that we should type over that with any "handle" that we want to use. I agree that was the way it used to be. For me, there was no such box using the new chat software. It does not give me a choice anywhere, except that when I logged on, I used "a1gutterman" as my username, and that is the name I have in the chat room. I then tried it with "Tim" as my username and that worked as well. When the "show" happens, will we be able to use any username we want? Or are we stuck with the name we register for the Sawdust Session with?

You can use any name you want.

Very similar story here - Tim!:( Just too much computering for me!:( The time has come for this person to drop out of trying to see live, streaming broadcasts. My daily time on a computer has reached it's maximum. The complications/difficulty/frustrations with some computerised operations just cannot be justified, by the end product. For this person, When a computer stops being a solution, and becomes part of a new operational problem, it is time to change operations! "Who needs it?"
I hope an additional spot will come open as a result of my dropping out. I would sign off if I knew how!

I just tried it again. My username was already filled in. I changed it to something else and I got the welcome to whatever chat with the name I had just entered. And Nicks welcome video was playing.
So, no problems on this end.

The actual sawdust session chat room automatically logs you in using your registration first name with a random number added to the end for uniqueness. Your last name is excluded. The automatic login prevents the need to login in twice - once for the sawdust session and again for the chat room. This current set-up is something that can be changed if people prefer to designate thier own chat room username and if Nick gives me the go ahead. But we would have to see how the chat room handles two people trying to login with the same username.

I am anxiously awaiting the answer to that questione, dickg1.
I would take a yes answer with mixed emotion. It would be nice to have a big, healthy, fast new computer but I am not looking forward to the prospect of transfering. I also don't think what is likely to happen. I can't afford it. I would have to give up supporting the shop as a tradeoff - and that ain't happening.
When I got up last night, 2:00 am, for my nightly regular - I logged on and tried the Sawdust Session to see if maybe the load delay is a function of web traffic. I wasn't able to get on then either.
Everything looks normal except that I am never allowed to login. The Sawdust Session starts, then after a wait, a loading progress bars appears indicating a down load is going on. Then the login screens appears (along with an addonchat logo), then I "by username" am invited to login. When I do, I get the error message and a "Wail a few minutes and try again" instruction.
BTW, I can change username there, too. But nothing changes except my name. My given name - not Dusty.

I don't think that it would be the operating system, because I am currently using Windows 2000 on a newer computer.

In light of admin's answer - have you updated your copy of 2000 whenever MS offered an upgrade? If not, that could be a problem.
Your comment indicates that your hardware is as old as your copy of 2000. In that case, ram memory size could be an issue causing excessive swapping to your hard drive with a potential for file corruption. There is also a possibility that the ram memory, if it is original, could have a slowly reacting bit which would potentially cause a corrupted file - the list could go on.
Unfortunately, any number of issues could be at the root of your difficulties and long distance diagnosis may only offer some suggestions. I wish I could help more.

I hope you reconsider.
However I tend to sympathize with you as really I HATE ADDIN's they always carry more problems than they solve and usually are nothing more than a way for the provider to try to sell a new product to you.
I added Java to my computer yesterday and then I fought with various problems the rest of the day. I think I have all the "non existing" conflicts worked out, but only time will tell. At two stages in the conflict I was really tempted to ditch Java and forget the whole mess myself.
I really question the effectiveness of the chatroom due to the delay in the broadcasts. Uusally when Nick asks for questions and the moment we actually see and hear the request a fairly long period of time has already elapsed. By then Nick has moved on and must come back to answer any questions. It would really be nice to be able ask Nick a question as he is doing the task at hand. The interludes do help to some degree but I think the large time delay needs to be resolved if possible for the the whole thing to work as envisioned.
Anyway the sawdust sessions are archived and you can watch them without the need for any addin's and that is a good thing.:D

I, too, am in a wait and see mode. I believe I have done everything I can do to make this work at my end.
All of the initially proposed "fixes" I had already tried. I did them all over again, a couple times.
This is what happens though when you try to make major changes on the fly.
I'd bet that if Shopsmith had requested a group of users to get together online and give this a test run - there would have been more volunteers than he could have used.
Some advance warning might have helped a lot.

I hope you will reconsider too. I personally know none of you on this forum but read it each day. I have contributed very little and usually don't say anything unless I really have something to say. Chuck, our generation came along at the wrong time to use computers. Some of us are better than others and have studied hard to understand the things. Personally, I am greatly intimidated by them and it disgust me that a 5 or 6 year old can sit down with no knowledge and do anything he or she wants to. They seem to be born with the genes to understand our electronic world.
Chuck, sleep on your decision to abort this forum because it is made from certain personalities that truly promote this "unselfish hobby" and you have always been one of the mainstays. If it were not for you and so many others, we would have no forum. There are a few thousand that belong to this forum but we rarely hear from them and your absence would definitely leave a dark hole.
Sometimes the simplest computer remedies can come in the wee hours of the morning when you suddenly wake up and say eureka! For days, I have been struggling to improve my potato gun ammunition and last night I had one of those eureka moments when I suddenly realised that I could turn wax on my lathe and make some rather high tech wax projectiles heehee. Yes, I'm a bit crazy too.
In closing, I hope that many of you after learning what the Chinese are doing to the olympics will reconsider furthering their economy which seems to be an on going discussion on this forum

Those of you who
do not use
new browsers running on XP or VISTA will likely experience problems with new scripts, because the browser is having to “guess” as to the language dialect of HTML to use, and guesses the incorrect markup.
Once that 1st / top priority element is corrected, your browser will at least give you a more specific reason as to why it cannot display your page.
