Sorry I forgot who did this modification. I sure do like it. Looks like a PennState mandrel. Question does the MDF just sit on top of the headstock?
Are the spring clamps sturdy enough to keep the board from sliding? Thank you again for re-posting this thread and the new pictures.

Yes, the MDF just sits on top of the headstock and the spring clamps hold it securely and prevent it from slipping but if you want you can use C-clamps instead.
Just to clarify things, I did not develop this idea - my B-I-L did. I just provided some input - he did the work. Since I'm retired and he isn't he doesn't have a lot of time to read/post stuff on the forum so I posted the idea for him.
Nick thought the idea was so great he planned on doing a Video Shop Tip on it but unfortunately didn't get it done before he, Drew and Shopsmith had to part ways.
