New owner of a Shopsmith, took me a while.

Howdy folks, I believe I`ve found the Best Forum!

I`ve not played in woodworking in quite some time, but I went w/a buddy to possibly buy some music equipment. At the end, she pointed to a garage & said theres wood stuff in there, turned my mandolin buy to a SS! I believe it to be a 1997 er? I`ll try to figure out how to multi pic post. Appreciate All Looks & Advice!!

Look in the Community section for How to Post a Picture near the top.

In the mean time the Serial Number you gave belongs to a Shopsmith Model 10ER made at the Eastern Plant around 1950. Does your Shopsmith look similar to the one in the picture below?

When you are able we would love to see pictures of your Shopsmith.

I would also recommend you check under the Maintenance and Repair section for Shopsmith Large Format Drawings, Illustrations and More by Everett Davis. This will be one of the first three topics. In it you will find a wealth of information on the Shopsmith tools. Some are directly linked there but most are on “My Google Drive” with documents too large to be directly linked. Everett has become the Shopsmith historian by saving and restoring manuals and other documents. While on his google drive check the topics 10E & 10ER Magna and PTWFE 10ER 1953. There is a lot of information there on the Shopsmith Model 10's and of course other Shopsmith Tools.

Well by Golly, Yes. Even that roll-able table its mounted on! My pix are from my phone & just a tad bigger then allowed. How much does that sucker weigh? It`s setup as a table saw, but Man-o-man did I look for other parts. I was really hoping to find the equipment for the lathe, especially that tool rest, no such luck though. I`ll see if my wife or 2 daughter`s can "shrink" my pix. Thank You Very Much guys!!

The Lathe Tool Rest parts come up for sale regularly on ebay. Remember when looking the Arm and post are different for the Model 10's than the ones for the Mark series tools. The Tool Rest part is interchangeable though. Remove the copper pipe piece from the tailstock so you can use it with the standard #2 Morse taper centers.

Here`s my brief story: Since the 80`s, I`ve always wanted to have 1 of these. I was the only 1 to take woodworking all 4 years in high school(Class of `84). Back then, they even had commercials...for these. Lol. The Lathe aspect is what I`m after now, table saw is covered. First will be some cleaning! Thank You again!!

Yours is a Model 10ER. When Magna Engineering Corporation, the original company to make the Shopsmith, changed the model from 10E to 10ER they didn't redo the Name Plate to allow enough space for 10ER where 10E was so they just put ER on it. Later the Name Plate was redesigned and had 10ER as the Model.

The commercials you saw back in the 80's were for the Mark V. The Shopsmith Models 10E followed by the 10ER were made from 1947 through 1953. I remember seeing the Mark 5/V demonstrated at the fair and other places in the 70's and 80's. I knew right away I wanted one someday as soon as I saw it demonstrated but it took decades before I got one.

Welcome Gasman66 to the forum. I too become a owner of a shopsmith early this year. I got a 1982 Mark 5 that I’ve already upgraded to the 520 table system, double bearing quill, and other stuff from e-bay. You can find what your look for.
