Another JIG SAW… What about the first one??
As a collector of unique Magna items, I’ve always been envious of those folks who’ve acquired their 10-ER with an A-34 jigsaw in its original box! I know those old-time original Shopsmith owners were often really careful with their original documents and packaging, but I always considered the jigsaw box to be a bit of a unicorn.
Well, I was lucky enough to pick up a 10-ER last summer from the son of its original owner - I was interested in this unit for its complete 4E jointer and mounting kit, but when I got there, this turned out to be the prize of the acquisition for me!
.
It even had the original shipping label from Magna (OH plant) to the hardware store where the system was purchased.
.
The box isn’t in great condition, but it more or less looks like all the others I’ve seen, printed with, “Another JIG SAW”. That got me wondering: what happened to the “first” jigsaw??
Well, that was answered through a recent eBay acquisition:
.
Aside from not having the word “Another” printed on the box, the Article Number (Montgomery Ward’s part numbering system) is missing the “K” suffix of the obviously later (“Another”) box. Not sure of the reason for this Article Number change, as both of the jigsaws contained in these boxes were the early style (with no partial belt cover). One mystery solved, another rears its head…
What can I say? Gotta collect ‘em all!
