Dealer Order Blanks - 10-ER Era

These provide an interesting window into the business of an independent Shopsmith dealer back in 10-ER days - and some of the items Magna would provide (in most cases, for a price) to support their sales efforts.

Brochures

Publication reprints

Trademark logos in paper and cloth

Shop coat with insignia (perhaps like the lab coat I picked up recently)

Display panel

Ad mats (I’ve got one of these I’ll share later for those unfamiliar)

Even filmed advertising for TV spots (hard to believe local retailers would try TV advertising in the early 1950s - I’m sure TV ownership was still pretty limited back then…). Maybe Russ Chapman has a copy of “Magna Movie No. 1”!

I acquired a copy of the Western Machinery article reprint recently, and admittedly it’s the first time I’ve ever looked at the article in detail. It had a couple of additional examples of the lab coat I recently acquired (or at least a similar style) being worn in the factory during production. I guess lab coats were part of the corporate uniform back in that era, even in a manufacturing environment.

Mark 2 Table Insert

Understandably, I’ve come across very few Mark 2 artifacts - the system wasn’t sold for very long, and that reflects in the number of Mark 2-specific accessories that were sold with them. So, this is pretty unusual…

Like everything about the Mark 2, it’s very cheaply made compared to anything from the Mark 5 family. It’s very thin, stamped sheet metal, and it came in a nondescript paper envelope harkening back to the packaging of table inserts from 10-ER days. I have a Mark 2 that’s undergoing restoration, so I’ll have a chance to use this down the road.

Nice collection of Model 10 stuff. You have items both in the early gray boxes and the later yellowish boxes. I see you have a set of the Jig Saw files in the box which is a rarer find.

If you check my thread here on the Community Page titled Shopsmith Model 10's What When and Where on page 10 you will see information on the "other" Table Raisers like yours above. One I have, shown in the picture there, is like both of yours but has a set screw instead of a knob while the other one has a different collar. A third one I have not pictured in the other thread is the same as both of yours.

Here is probably the rarest of the Model 10 items. It is an original preliminary Model 10E owners manual. These were presumably shipped with the first 250 units Magna sent to Montgomery Wards. This is the only original copy anyone here has ever seen. I uploaded a scanned copy to Vintage Machinery years ago. The restored preliminary manual Everett Davis has on his Google drive was made from this manual.

Excellent, I had to laugh when I saw that little plastic piece on your exposed threads. You can’t see mine in the photo, however I installed a piece of tubing on mine as well because it kept wearing the paint off in that spot!

Well, it was pretty simple and not very interesting. :) Someone listed it on eBay. I don't remember what I paid for it or whether it was a Buy It Now or a bid. I knew it was special because I had never heard of or seen one so I had to have it. I uploaded a copy to Vintage Machinery on 4 Jul 2015 so I must have gotten it earlier that year.

John has some very nice historical Shopsmith Model 10 items including this original manual, not to forget the autographed copy of the book Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone and the rare lower belt guard. In John's possession these items are preserved and not lost.

As I understand it this original manual for the Shopsmith Model 10E was kind of a rush job to have a manual ready to ship out with the original 250 Model 10E's going to West Coast Montgomery Ward stores. The printed manuals were not going to be ready in time, so these typed mimeographed manuals were made with the intent of replacing them with printed manuals when available. It is unfortunate that with at least 250 of these manuals going out with Model 10E's most have not survived.

Here is another rare Model 10 item. I have two of them. It is the accessory rear fence lock for the 10E table saw fence. I just need another 10E fence for the second one.

Speaking of 10E fences, here is one that I got with one of my Model 10's. The owner added a shop made rear lock and the bar on the top. It appears to be a series of dedicated stops. Probably for repeated drilling operations. I can't think of any other purpose. The stops rotate in and out of position and are made of phenolic. The stops barely overhang the top edge of the fence but they will allow a piece of stock to butt up against them.

I don't have a "fancy" one with stops like John's Model 10E Fence above, but it is an interesting addition to the fence. Someone saw a need and made something to fill that need.

I do have a Model 10E Miter with an interesting addition. It came with a Model 10E I bought about 8 years ago.

This is the only hold down I have seen like this on a Shopsmith Miter. Likely made for another brand but was adapted to this early Model 10E Miter.

Early 10-E (?) Motor Pulley

This is a motor pulley intended for what I’m guessing was a Model 10-E, but seemingly never used. I’ve never seen any other accessory item in a box of this style, there’s no Magna-style part number on the label, and the pulley itself doesn’t have any manufacturer’s markings on it as one would typically see on a 10-ER pulley.

Any other examples of this labeling style out there, or hints as to the origin of this piece?

Yuba “Goldie” Mark 5 Brochure

This is the truest representation I’ve seen of the “goldie” color scheme, from a 1960 Yuba Power Products brochure for their then recently restyled version of the Mark 5.

Inside this brochure, the pages are identical to the later and more common Magna American version of the “goldie” brochure (even Shopsmith Inc. used the same graphics in their early red background brochures for their Mark V).

Lambswool: the Shopsmith Secret Weapon

I think Americans had a lot to polish back in the 1950’s - pot & pans, family silver, shoes - you name it. And their Shopsmith systems were ready to provide that essential function… so long as you had your lambswool!

Here are some examples from the Magna Engineering catalog, including the early part number format. You could wrap these around either your sanding drum or 6” lathe plate for all your polishing needs
