Restoration Progress On My 1955 Greenie

I do KNOT have a Greenie. The following is speculation and might easily be disproved: Due to the lack of swaging marks and the marks that ARE on the two posts, could this logo have come with a SS that DID KNOT have an access hole? Or, could your SS have had the access hole drilled and the previous owner had knot figured out how to re-hang the logo? Just a thought.

edit: On second thought, after reviewing the picure you showed us, that looks like a factory hole, still...

Amazing what a coating of sawdust and funky lighting will do. The other blade is quite shiney and sharp. The 'black' one is not too dull(cutting wise) either. The black one was rusty and thrown in with a used arbor purchase. It is also a 9" one(not easy to find nowdays).

The original Greenies did not have the access hole and had no need for the spring steel. It was attached from the inside with 2 rubber washers and 2 push nuts. Your headstock case may have been replaced with a newer style. That's what I have done to my Greenies to improve maintenance access.

You mention that you have replaced your headstock case with the newer style with access hole. If that's the case, how is your medallion held on? That is the answer that I am looking for.

As I understand it, the EARLY Greenies did not have the access hole nor holes in the control/floating sheave shaft bushing. Apparently the 'push nut' attachment method was continued for later Greenies. :(

Are you saying "later Greenie" = One with an access hole but a push nut mounted medallion? That would seem very odd from a design standpoint UNLESS they (SS) shipped some inventory like that because they didn't have the correct medallions.

I am saying that because: You obviously have a 'factory' hole. Your medallion has marks resembling those that would be made by push nuts(tinnerman). You do NOT have an 'earlier' greenie(1955???).

What is NOT explained, is WHY the swaging/spring slot IS on your medallion.:confused:

More input from additional Greenie owners would be most illuminating!:)

I have a "Greenie" made in late 1956. It has the "factory" hole with the prongs cast in it.

Curiously, I only have two screws that hold the belt guard on vs. MickeyD's six(?) screws. Wonder when that changed?

Even narrowing the question down further, what year / month.

judapre1982 SN is 303185, which means it was made between Aug/Sept 1955 and has NO access hole.

My SN 309828 Oct/Nov 1955 production run HAS the access hole.

Assuming we both have original headstock castings, this would say that the access hole was added somewhere very close to 3rd quarter 1955.

I wonder if they went from 6 screws to only 2 screws to solve the problem I had with the way tube hole in the belt cover rubbing up against the top of the way tube as shown in my post 194? JPG also said his "Goldie" only had two screws holding the belt cover on in his post 210.

I noticed that item # 4 on this supplement pdf file confirms that the 3" hole was added in 1955. (This takes a little while to open) John McCrossen

Also of unknown date of change, is the linkage plate from the switch down to the speed control. I seem to recall this is to prevent turning off the SS when set to higher speeds and has been used to explain the purpose of the notch on the rear of the speed control dial. Anybody know the REAL story??? Anybody actually have one of these???

When I had my belt cover off, I notice the brand new drive sleeve assembly bearing oozed some lubricant. The unit has only been run for about 1 minute since the bearing was installed. Concern? Wrong type of bearing?

Do you know the history of the saw or are you going off the serial number. You might have an upgraded headstock casing and whoever replaced the casing transferred the serial number plate to the new casing (that's what I did).

A little leakage is normal. The metal seals on the bearing are not air tight and as the bearing heats up some grease may push out. You could probably eliminate the grease seeping with 2r seals.

What image are you looking at? This is the drive end of the headstock in the posted picture. The bearing spring washer is in place.

Got the bearing at an industrial supply store here in San Diego. Why?

If your calling this:

the bearing keeper, it's mounted on the quill end. If you mean something else that should have been shown on the photo with the oozing bearing, I don't have anything and need to know what it is that I am missing.
