Mark V 500 saw guard help

I just picked up a Mark V 500 on craigslist. It came with a bunch of spare parts/accessories...some may solve my problem but I am not sure what I am looking for.

The serial number indicates that the saw was made in 1959.

I have the lower saw guard with the 2 1/4" round dust port. The clamp on the dust port that is supposed to mount on the quill stop but ti does not reach when the blade is held in the middle of the guard (photo 1).

Is it possible that I have a different shorter arbor that I'm supposed to use for the table saw blade?

It seems that the guard clamp should be a couple of inches to the left.

These are the obvious guard parts. I know that I'm missing some. If anyone has pictures of the parts I'm missing, I may be able to find them in the three boxes of stuff I have.

Thanks. I think I have one if those in the boxes of extras. I saw the rounded end and didn't think it was for a table saw.

Your guard does not appear to be SS oem. As such I have no clue.

Your blade may have a 5/8" hole. Requires a different arbor.

The lower Saw Blade Guard you have (part number 505705) is one that came out in the 1960 and I believe originally with the Mark VII. It will fit on the Mark 5 and is a much better lower guard than was available when your Mark 5 was made. It uses the Upper Saw Blade Guard part number 505627 and that upper guard also pairs with part number 505628 Lower Saw Blade Guard. A picture of that Saw Blade Guard set is below and the bracket is the same to hold the upper guard to your lower guard. Notice the difference in how the lower guard below clamps to the quill compared to yours.

The Arbor you are using, as you already realize, is not the correct one to use for Saw Blades with the Saw Blade Guards in place. Since the Saw Blade you are using has a 5/8" arbor hole you need the 5/8" Arbor part number 555321 and if using a Shopsmith Saw Blade with the 1-1/4" arbor hole you would need 505511 (or 22 032 the same arbor pre-1964). There are similar arbors to these (555130, 555118 & 555608) but are longer and for the 510/505, 520, Mark 7 & 4 Table systems not the original or 500 table system yours should have. The two arbors you need to use can be seen in the picture below which shows most of the Arbors made for the Shopsmith tools over the years. I chose this picture so you could compare the different arbors.

The arbor you have can be seen in the picture above and is part number 22 031. That arbor simply cannot work with that lower guard.

The Upper Saw Blade Guard you have is not a Shopsmith one so there is no hardware available to attach it to the Shopsmith Lower Saw Blade Guard you have.

I already ordered arbors that should work with the guard and all of my 5/8" blades.

I looked around for replacement parts for the upper guard model number how showed but could not find any. That's OK - I'm not used to using an upper guard any way. Plus I may want to upgrade to the new Profence/table system which I think comes woth new guards.

If you upgrade to the Pro Fence Table System (aka Model 520) new from Shopsmith it will come with all the items listed on the catalog page linked below. That includes the Upper and Lower Saw Blade Guards. It does not come with the current longer 5/8" Arbor part number 555608 needed for use with the larger Table System's Lower Saw Blade Guard. The longer 5/8" Arbor P/N 555118 was replaced by P/N 555608 and both are shown in my previous post.

Instead of buying the 520 Table System upgrade you may want to consider buying a used Mark V 520 which will have the Table System you are interested in besides being a newer Mark V and having the 1-1/8 HP motor. Some older Mark V 520 Tables do not have the Direct-Reading Rip Fence Scales described in the upgrade. There was a Mark V 520 for sale near me for $1200 and included a Bandsaw, Jointer, Power Station and Dust Collector. Even $1200 for just a Mark V 520 is still cheaper than buying the upgrade to put on your Mark 5 from the 1950's and would leave extra cash in your pocket to buy any needed replacement parts.

I see that guard was made for the Mark VII, I don't recall having seen it before.

You are using the 5/8" universal arbor. Change the order of the washers and blade on the arbor to move the blade closer to the headstock. 🙂

ie, from left to right. arbor, thin washer, blade, thick washer, tongue washer nut.

You likely don't need the second thin washer for this application. The universal arbors came with one thick and two thin washers, but usually only two were used depending on what was being mounted. so 1 thick and 1 thin, or 2 thin for wider things like dado stacks, grinding wheels,etc.

I like using the setup you show in your picture with the Lower Saw Blade Guard P/N 505628. It is nice to have dust collection for the Model 10's. That arbor (the 5/8" Universal Arbor) is still too long for the blade when using the lower Saw Blade Guard P/N 505705 on a Mark 5/V Headstock. As you can see from the pictures in the OP's original post that Lower Saw Blade Guard is a solid cast guard which is narrower than the one you have which can also have the added spacer for dados and other wider items.

I tried the different arbor/blade combinations this morning that have been discussed in this thread. Now I have to eat a little crow. (Sorry to the crows) :o

As I said above using the 5/8" Universal Arbor (currently 5/8" Molder/Dado Arbor) or any other name it has had over the years does not work with the Lower Blade Guard 505705. Unfortunately, the 5/8" Arbor P/N 555321 is a bit too long to use with this Lower Saw Blade Guard P/N 505705 and have it all the way seated on the Quill. If you look at the picture of the Arbors in my previous post you can see that the 1-1/4" Arbor P/N 505511 is actually shorter than the 5/8" Arbor P/N 555321 as to where the blade is located in relationship to the Quill. This small difference causes the 5/8" Arbor blades to be against the side of the Lower Saw Blade Guard P/N 505705 before the guard is fully seated against the Quill's Retaining Ring. A 1-1/4" arbor hole blade mounted on Arbor 505511 has only about a 1/4" clearance to the Lower Blade Guard's outer edge.

If you look at the instruction sheet WaterGeek posted the first section describes it use. There is no mention of using the 5/8" Arbor P/N 505506 for Saw Blades or any other use. It only lists using the 1-1/4" Arbor for 10" & 9" Saw Blades, the 10" Sanding Disk and the Molder Head which until recently mounts directly to the Spindle without an arbor.

Sorry for giving you some bad information on using that guard with 5/8" Arbor blades. Although I have one it is a Guard I have never used on my Shopsmith's. Changing to the 520 Table/Fence system will resolve that issue. In the meantime if you wanted to have a guard set for your Mark 5 you can use the Lower Guard 505628 with the Upper Guard 505627 which come up for sale from time to time on the used market. If looking for that Guard set do make sure the Upper Guard has the part called the "Shoe" which is the heavy wire loop that guides the guard up over the material being cut. Without it the Upper Guard is useless. I have seen a number of these Upper Guards being sold over the years without the Shoe.

Not sure which guards you have but I think I have versions that should fit your machine. Below is a pic of the upper guard. I think I have the lower guard it came with and another one that will work. PM me if you want to do something. You can have the parts for the cost of shipping.
