I have no idea what I got into. I typed the serial number in and it’s “not found” ! What is this “fence” thing?

The serial number indicates it was manufactured in 1994, and I believe week 05 but I could be wrong on that last part.

The fence is for the Jointer which is hopefully amongst the goodies you received with your ShopSmith

I would say the SS9405 indicates an early SS Inc. product made prior to the switch to date 'serial numbering'.

Note the crinkle paint.

I do have the jointer along with a jigsaw, lathe attachments, assorted saws included dado, table and a little table, a couple different chucks, 1 coupler, a little wooden mallet and a long Allen wrench. What does the attachment for the shaper/router look like and what length jigsaw blade does it take?

Jigsaw = 5" (Pinless) IIRC? Pins are easily removed from coping saw blades.

Shaper router cutters are attached to the quill shaft.

Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum.

Thank you for adding the pictures. They are a great help in describing things. Shopsmith Mark 5 serial number SS 9405 would have likely been made in 1975. There are no records from that time period, so it is an estimate I have made. Hopefully included in the items you received are the Owner's Manuals for the different tools.

JPG answered about the Jig Saw Blades. As for the Shaper/Router Attachment if you mean the fence there is a picture of that below. It is the one for the original Table System but also fits on the Model 10E and 10ER shown mounted in the picture.

If you are referring to the Shaper Cutters and Router Bits themselves, they use an arbor/spindle for the Shaper Cutters and a Chuck for the Router Bits.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I did get 2 books with my SS. I think one is a copy of the original. But they seem to only be the self learn books. I haven’t really spent much time looking through it yet.

The Owner's Manual cover for your Mark 5 should look very similar to the 1973 cover shown below.

The Self Study Guide has 10 chapters.

Another common book found with the Shopsmith Tools is titled "Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone" by R. J. DeCristoforo. It goes further in-depth on using the Mark 5/V than the manual but the first edition from 1953 features the Model 10E/ER instead of the Mark 5/V.

Your Mark was manufactured as a Mark 5/V. When SS introduced the Model 510 they started calling everything before that a Model 500, so that is what yours is. We sometimes use "pre-500" and other terms to differentiate among the 500's. Looking at the carriage in your second picture, yours has not been upgraded and remains a 500.

Models 500, 505, 510, and 520 differences are the table systems. The later models have larger tables and the ability to expand the table system. All for a price, of course.

SS used to have pdf summary manuals for all models for free download, but looking at the site I can no longer find free versions. Here is a Mark 4 manual: (https://shopsmith.com/wp-content/uploads/857400-FREE.pdf) Primary differences from what you have is the machine is shorter (shorter bench and way tubes) and it has a 520 main table. They have the 500 manual for purchase, but it is paper. Maybe another member knows what's going on with the pdf manuals.

The cover I previously posted is showing the 1973 Owner's Manual which is only 22 pages including the covers. It does not include the parts lists or diagrams. Getting a more current Mark V 500 Manual would give you a lot more information. Even though your Mark 5 was made in 1975 it would be almost identical to the last Mark V 500 models made. The Headstock changed from the "B" to the "C" Headstock in 1991. That change affected the switch type used and its location moved slightly. Parts diagrams and lists are available here on the Shopsmith Website. Parts specific to the Model 500 Table System are no longer produced and few if any are still available new from Shopsmith. Many used Table System parts are available.

As David indicated the Summary Manuals links no longer work. Using the Mark 4 Manual will have some drawbacks. The Table/Carraige/Fence system is different. Alignment of the table system varies somewhat by model. General operations will be similar although the Mark 4 is a shorter (Bench & Way Tubes) version of the Mark V 520S. Use of the Table system will be different. Purchasing a MARK V 500 Owner's Manual would be a good investment and is a great reference. Related PDF's can be downloaded from here on the Shopsmith website.

#8 is a morticing attachment. Not sure what is sticking out of the bottom.

#7 is the hold down for the morticing attachment.

#5 is a Rip-Strate. Not made anymore, it's a device to aid ripping boards by keeping them along the fence and stopping kickback.

#4, not sure. Might be part of the morticing attachment hold down.

#3 is a universal arbor. Could be 1/2" or 5/8" spindle. The half inch allows you to mount saw blades, grinding wheels, etc. with a 1/2" hole. The 5/8" is used for shaping tools. Maybe something else I forgot too.

#2 is a lathe center headstock center for small diameter turning.

#1 is a tailstock insert that looks like it has a lathe live center stuck in it.

#1 The #2 Morse taper eccentric for the tail stock with a dead (cup) center installed for lathe turning.

#2 The drive center that mounts to the head stock for lathe turning.

#3 Moulder/dado arbor missing some of the washers.

#5 Ripstrait stock guide used with the table saw.

#6 Old style hold down. Used to hold stock down to the table for various operations.

#4,7,8 Parts for the hollow chisel mortising system.

Ed, I think what’s sticking out the bottom on #8 is actually on that piece of wood under the mortising attachment. Thanks all!

The black thing sticking out of the mortising attachment (8) is a mortising bit chisel.

For reference.

#1 the picture below shows the Tailstock Eccentric in place. As has already been said it is a "Dead" Cup Center inserted into it in your picture.

#3 is the 5/8" Universal Arbor, later known as the Molder Dado Arbor, part number 505506 and a complete one is shown below.

#4, 7 & 8 are parts of the Mortising attachment and a picture of some of the different era attachments are shown below. #4 and 7 are the Hold-down parts. The Hold-Down Post goes into the hole in the top of the Fence for your Mark 5 held in by the set screw. The current Hold-Down shown below has the addition of a "T" Slot nut at the bottom of the post for the newer Table Systems having "T" Track Fences. There is/was an upgrade "T" Track Fence available for the Mark 5/V 500 original Table System.

Beginning Woodworking is a Hold-down set up but not from Shopsmith. I have a very similar one, if not the same, from Craftsman (Sears) I bought for my Craftsman Table Saw years ago.
