Template / dimensions needed making box to fit on way tubes

Good morning

Does anyone have a drawing / template to fit a cut sheet of plywood over the way tubes?

I’m looking to build a drum sander and need to build a box that will have 2 sides of it fit over and down between the tubes, with the bottom of the “box” resting on the tubes. Im thinking slots in the plywood that the tubes will fit between with the plywood extending past the tubes, securing & resting the “box” on the tubes with the slots holding it in place.

Are you building the one from Stockroom Supply? If so, I put together a cutlist and mount for these a few years ago. I'd need to find it in my files.

I’m not building the Stockroom Supply one. I purchased plans from Stumpy Numbs and am using the plans for the top, drum, feed table. I’m planing on modifying the “box” part to fit on the Shopsmith, incorporating the top, drum & feed table into the “box” (not yet designed) that will attach to and be driven by the Shopsmith.

My thinking is I can eliminate the need for another motor and use the Shopsmith to drive it. I really like Stumpy’s design where you not only have a drum / thickness sander, but also have a “sand flea” type sander on the top.

The .pdf attachment shows the mount I made. It is a peice of 3/4" plywood 8 3/4" x 26" I then laminated two pieces 6" x 26" and trimmed then to an overall with of 5.25 which will fit between the bench tubes of a Mark 5. This can serve as a base for any attachment you want to add to your SS. I then built Stockroom Supply sander on top of this base and made no changes other than the height of the box so the center of the sanding drum lined up with the quill.

There are two bottom pieces that are 2" by 8 3/4" These are secured to the base with a 4" x 1/4" carriage bolt and a through star knob. I set them 5" in from each end so they can be rotated 90 degrees to drop the mount onto the bench tubes and then turned perpendicular to the tubes and the knobs tightened to keep everything secure.

Once mounted I move the carriage over to the base to pinch it between the carriage and the end of the bench to keep it from moving side to side.

With my setup the bottom pieces aren't necessary and the sander stays in place with just a friction fit and I stopped using them a few years ago.

Thanks Chris, those are the dimensions I was looking for. I can now use those dimensions to make the side pieces of the “box”

That 5 1/4" needs to be 5 1/8" if you have a greenie/goldie with 1 7/8" bench tubes.

;) The existence of those early 1 7/8" tubes is not known to everyone so it needs to be pointed out when relevant. ;)

In this case, I think Chris said bench tubes when we meant to say way tubes. So for this project, not relevant.(?)

Yep! Only the BENCH tubes od varies(whoops :o )
