As JPG noticed the Miter is not a Shopsmith one. The Miter Slot in the table is a common size used for Table Saws unlike the Mark series which has a proprietary size bar/slot. If the condition of the wood Extension Table is not useable it is relatively easy to make a replica. I have made several for my Model 10E restorations. Hopefully there is a box of related parts for this Model 10E. Some of the Model 10E specific parts like the Extension Pins (P/N 109-2) that hold the fence to the Extension Table are hard to find.

Below is a similar restored Model 10E to the one you are looking at. It has a replica of the original Wood Extension Table and the later Miter. It is shown with everything it would have come with from the factory plus on a wood top bench with the Metal Bench Ends and Retractable Casters. Motor optional.

Maybe the original one was lost over the years?

The miter gage says Craftsman.

The wood on the extension table is not so good.

So, what is the best type of wood to use? (Oak?)

It did not have any Extra parts with it. :(

The only thing I like about the Bench is it has Square head bolts which fit the Era of the machine.

The Serial # is E 3868

I don't think it has extension pins?

I took it over to the other shop for storage till It's time in line. 😃

I did not have any help to unload it.

Since it needs to be Derusted anyway. 🙂

I disassembled it as much as I could.

I got the sawblade off and the carriage freed up.

That thing is Heavy. :eek:

Besides the headstock being stuck.(I sprayed it with Unstick Stuff 😉 ) it was successfully unloaded.

I got the tailstock removed with no damage. 😃

The motor, motor plate, and switch removed.

The nuts on the motor plate were 19/32 🙂

I have one of those wrenches somewhere from my Grandpa's collection.

The Bolts had a 1/2" head(5/16 x 18tpi) .

Probably the original nuts and bolts.

The tie-bar did not want to move easily either.

I will soak it and the headstock and base plate arm.

Patience is the virtue. 😃

The main issue is the table post.

They are solid post and are stuck.

No big deal Right?

But someone has been Hammering on one of them. :eek: :rolleyes:

It Mushroomed the bottom of the post a-lot. 🙁

I can clean this up on my lathe once I get it out.

I took the table top off and will soak the tie bar.

I will remove the by pushing the post downwards.

Arrow in the picture shows where the post is damaged.

I have a Speed Changer on the way. :rolleyes: 😃

Will the old speed changer I purchased be era correct with this machine ?

The 10E serial # is E 3868.

The Wood Extension Table replicas I have made are 3/4" cabinet grade plywood. The original Wood Extension Table was also 3/4" plywood. I used an original table as the pattern for dimensions and hole locations. There were two versions of the Wood Extension Table and varied by the holes where it mounts to the bracket.

Below is the early one.

The later table is easier and sturdier in its mounting to the Bracket.

Unlike the Mark series Shopsmith's, the Miter slot in the Model 10E and 10ER main table is the common size used by most table saws. The Craftsman Miter will work just isn't original.

Since your Model 10E is serial number E3868 no Speed Changer is correct for that era Model 10E. The Speed Changer is an accessory that came out sometime after your Model 10E was made. The Speed Changer in your picture is a later one and not the first ones that came out. I would not bother trying to find the first version of the Speed Changer simply to have the one closest to the time your Model 10E was made. The Speed Changer is a sought-after accessory and carries a premium price. Many times, it is cheaper to get one with an entire Model 10.

The Model 10's are heavy. The shipping weight was around 200 pounds and that's without the bench or extra accessories.

It sounds like you will have to do some filing of the bottom of the Table Posts to remove the "mushroom" on the bottom ends. A slight bevel on the end will be helpful. If you don't like how the Table post ends look after filing them down, you can reverse them during reassembly putting the now filed ends in the Table Tie Bar.

At Home Depot I have the choice of Sande Ply, Birch, Red Oak or Maple.

As for the Miter Saw Gauge :rolleyes:

I have no problem using that one, But I have my eye on one on E bay.

The Speed Changer will be here Saturday.

I guess I am more of an Extra function kind of guy than an Era correct guy Anyway.

Great Idea on the Table post.

I have an Atlas/Craftsman lathe that I will turn down the Mushroomed end of the shaft.

When I get that clean up, I will install that end into the Tie bar.

Just checked - memory correct

I believe 22 and 25 will work. I recommend the inner cogged belts(more flexible around small radii)

I agree with what JPG said about the Speed Changer version and the cogged belts. 4L220 and 4L 250 belts will work for most cases in place of the original belt spec. Some motors require different belt sizes.

I think I have the Original Motor with Matching Pulleys.

I am Fortunate to have an (Old School) parts store to look for these Belts. :)

And I am old enough to state (Old School) :D

They will probably get me these belts with the numbers you Provided. :)
