The restoration is fantastic! What is the dust deflector/collector made of?

Looks good. After you have used it awhile, let us know how your dust collector shroud for it works out, or if you would change anything for a 2nd revision. Looks really good though IMHO. :)

RF Guy- turned a couple bowls and so far works well. The shroud holds a lot so what’s not sucked up is easily sucked up with loose 4” hose as I move along. The finer dust is well taken care of and that was my biggest concern. I make changes all the time, on everything it seems like. If I change for the better….will post modification:-)

Oh yea, that’s a beauty! The polished mechanicals remind me of some of Skip’s restorations. The butcher-block bench is also a nice touch, and I especially like the matching lower shelf suspended from threaded rods.

My 1956 greenie very nearly done. I wanted to set this up as a dedicated lathe, and use my 520 for everything else. I made a few upgrades:

1 1/8hp motor

poly V belt

2 bearing quill

510 carriage

I wanted the 510 carriage so that I can install ShopSmith's Universal Tool Rest. I haven't gotten that yet.

I did get a Nova ProTek chuck. Then I used it to make a wooden handle to allow me to hand turn the shaft as needed. I figure if the hub acts as a heat sink, a face plate will be a better heat sink.

I'm temporarily borrowing the 520 tool rest from the other machine until I spring for the new tool rest. That package will be a tad pricey and my have to wait until after the holidays.

Nice job! This is by far my favorite color scheme. If I ever repaint my 520....

Looks great! Did you choose the SS touch up paint? If not, what is it? The detail work on the speed control is excellent.

I used the paint from ShopSmith. For the speed control I used a polishing compound and a Dremmel tool. This machine did not come with a tailstock (or a 510 carriage for that matter.)

I found both on eBay rather easily. Grey to green was pretty simple. When I get my Universal Tool Rest, it will also go green.

I have an idea for a butcher board style pedestal that will raise the whole machine up to a better wood turning height while adding weight and stability. I would clamp the feet to the pedestal somehow and have retractable casters so it could be moved if needed, but sit directly on the floor when in use. I also plan to use the accessory stand on my 520 as a template to make one that will be designed to hold wood turning specific items such as the chuck, chisels, etc.

Model 10ER (S/N R51721) Dedicated Drill Press

Just finished reassembly of this guy today - converting to dedicated drill press. Had to replace a few parts along the way, clean up some motor wiring, and update the power cord. The speed changer got a thorough cleanup and new paint and belts, and it works like a charm!

Mounted it on a custom cabinet from scrap in the garage - even repurposed a 10ER knob for a door handle!

Polished up nicely!

This was the state of it when I picked it up.

Silver paint on the belt cover and speed reducer?

Nice base cabinet for being scrap wood and I like the knob. The Model 10 itself looks great. Even though I am a bit of a traditionist when it comes to paint color the silver on the Belt Cover and Speed Changer are a nice contrast. I have considered making a dedicated Model 10 Drill Press and this may be the inspiration I needed. Model 10ER S/N 101291 is sitting in the shop awaiting restoration. With the time it has been taking to sell my restorations lately this may be a good one to keep as a Drill Press. Of course, I will keep the parts not used for a dedicated Drill Press so it can be returned to regular use in the future.

BTW, tis a good idea to move the speed changer crank to the outboard side of the speed changer brackets. Increases the space available for the hand to clear the headstock lock.

Thanks so much! I find myself enjoying the restoration process as much as the woodworking at this point.

It’s actually hammered silver on the belt cover and speed changer. I was looking for a bit of contrast to the original charcoal grey on the rest of the machine - not to mention the fact it’s what I had on hand!

I appreciate the compliments, Russ! This was definitely one of those “I really don’t need another one of these” projects - so I figured I’d have some fun with it. I decided to only paint the two aluminum items that had really lost their coloring (old Magna aluminum castings never seem to retain their paint…), so thought a bit of contrast was in order!

The base was another fun part of the project - found a nice slab of cherry that had been in a fire, but still cleaned up beautifully for the top, and the adornments on the door were a good use of spare parts! Definitely one of a kind!!

I'm brand new to the forum and knee deep into a shopsmith that makes the second picture brand new. I've taken it apart and cleaned and painted, wish I'd have done different colors now but I'm poor and went with what was available. Absolutely beautiful work you have done. I look forward to posting pictures when I'm done even though it looks no where near as beautiful. I love it tho so that's what matters I suppose.
