Re: 10ER Way Tubes - Use them on PowerPro or dedicated drill press?

There is an article I found on the Yahoo erdocuments group . The file is westernmach1.pdf at the bottom of the file page. I tried to upload it here but the file is too big. Western Machinery and Steel World - January 1951 - Precision Makes the Shopsmith Page 3 paragraph 3 reads The machine is made ...

Re: 10ER Way Tubes - Use them on PowerPro or dedicated drill press?

I measured the tubes on my other two 10ER's S/N 58365/1951 and S/N 38728/1950 today. They measured 0.203" the same as the one I measured the other day. My MK V drill press and the MK 7 both have 10ER thick tubes but I can't measure them without taking the tie bar off. I think that it is safe to...

Re: 10ER Way Tubes - Use them on PowerPro or dedicated drill press?

Orrrrr some PO turned them to 'polish'/derust. While that is possible, if you look at the scratches they are virtually identical and extremely uniform. This from two machines that were built 5 years apart and and are over 60 years old. Unless the same person refurbed both sets of tubes in exactly t...

Re: 10ER Way Tubes - Use them on PowerPro or dedicated drill press?

Well this has been an interesting ride! :) It certainly has! :D Tomorrow I will back the truck out so I can get to the two in the garage. I remember that when I first got them (both from the same estate) and both with speed changers for $175 for both and one with a 3/4 HP motor, I thought one had t...

Re: 10ER Way Tubes - Use them on PowerPro or dedicated drill press?

OK, I've read many times here about 10ER tubes are heavier. Just how much is the weight difference? As JPG said the wall thickness is 3/16" as opposed to the MK V tubes that are 1/8" thick. When you get them in your hands there is a significant difference in my opinion. At the end if the ...

Re: 10ER Way Tubes - Use them on PowerPro or dedicated drill press?

The really interesting thing to me is that you can buy the tubes in whatever length you want, and with even heavier walls .. all the way up to 0.375. Stretch 10ER lathe, anyone? BUT what is the outside surface like? I'm under the impression, possibly incorrect, that 10ER tubes are plain DOM ...

Re: 10ER Way Tubes - Use them on PowerPro or dedicated drill press?

I would like to see a picture with the shorter tubes. I thought I might have to do that. I used the 18" pieces of bench tubes I cut off when I made my shorty. My initial feeling was that they may be a little too long given the front leg sticks out past the table a bit and would interfere with ...
