Re: Looking for project ideas

I think at least try to make a nice shop stool or step stool with what you have. That’s a great idea - I’ve been wishing I had a taller step stool to make it easier to reach the upper shelves in my shop. Then I’d be able to give my wife back the folding plastic stool I “borrowed” from the laundry r...

Re: Looking for project ideas

Just my opinion, but if I had old growth wood I would not use it for anything like a planter which will destroy the wood over time. There is a very limited supply of old growth wood, It is precious and it should be preserved. John - Yes, we're on the same page, that's why I salvaged it rather than ...

Re: Looking for project ideas

Book or storage shelves, small boxes, desk organizers and display cases come to mind. An apothecary storage unit for small fasteners. There are many kids toys that can be made with smaller pieces as well. When my kids were little I made a chalk table for them with a cover so they could do other cra...

Re: Looking for project ideas

Do you have a good woodworking bench? I have a soft spot for the Moravian style, and that old-growth pine sounds perfect for one. That's a really good looking bench - nice hardware too. I'm still using the workbench I built as my first SS project back in 1985. Not nearly as pretty as yours but it s...

Looking for project ideas

I've got a big stack of 100 year old slow growth pine 1x4's, 2x4's, and 2x6's in 8 to 14 foot lengths that I salvaged when we tore down and replaced our 1920's vintage detached garage. It's pretty cool wood - it has the closely spaced growth rings and sharp corners of lumber of that era. It's curren...

Re: Mini Traditional Bench Build with Mark V Assist

For a "beginner" you've got quite a few tools! I like the multi-wood benchtop and I'm impressed you were able to get it prepped for glue-up using only scrapers. Where did you find your 500? Does it include a jointer?

Re: New to us SS 510

Dust could definitely be an issue even with a dust collection system and a plastic barrier sheet if both sides share a common forced air heating/cooling system. I set up my shop with a dedicated mini-split HVAC system to keep the shop separate from the system for the adjacent garage apartment. I att...

Re: Custom Fence for Cast Iron Bandsaw Table

My favorite fence for the cast iron band saw table is still an old miter gauge with a straight wider longer board fastened. It's easy to change angles to the blade and it fastens solid with the shopsmith tool box I bought a fence for my bandsaw with the aluminum table and it works fine, but I like ...

Re: Loose Mark 7 Carriage Assembly

You may also want to consider installing the adjustable telescoping legs on each side of the table when set up in drill press mode. Even if the table doesn't slide when drilling, it will deflect under pressure without the legs.

Thanks, makes sense from a strength standpoint to use the thicker red dot location.
