Re: How do you really feel about the term "Smart Motor"?

Totally with you on this one. "Smart Motor" just doesn't sit right when we've been calling it a headstock forever. It's like when a brand tries to rebrand something classic with a flashy new name.

Re: Which Lathe upgrade?

You know, I'm leaning towards the speed reducer too. It just seems like it would make life a whole lot easier when dealing with those bigger bowls. Messing with your workflow is no joke. Tough decision, but if I had to pick, I'd say go for the speed reducer first.

Re: Packing & Moving a Shopsmith

From my experience, it's better to let the moving company pack, especially for something as complex as a Shopsmith. I used Three Movers for my move, and they offered both packing and moving services. It felt safer because they knew exactly how to handle and pack everything properly, avoiding any dam...

Re: Gallery of Restorations

The only painting on mine for the cover was the silver for the logo and name. I polished up the cover with some plastic polish I had. I am looking for howtomakebrown match for this green to paint the Belt Covers of the two Mark 2's I am restoring after they are repaired. One has a small wear hole w...

Re: Shift knob

I made some years ago for my old Chevy 4x4 truck. I no longer have the truck so I can't get pictures of the knobs I made. I had one of those as well. Fortunately, I never had to ride in the back seat... but I did feel the person who did. I can see this being a hit in terms of usability. I'm not sur...

Re: Work Boots for Woodworking

Actually this is a valid subject in spite of a possibly shaky origin. My wood shop is 1500 sq. ft. (36' x 40' plus a small old cellar room) in the basement of the west wing of the house and all concrete. My feet, legs and back have NEVER liked concrete floors after a few minutes of standing. I do h...

Re: I am looking for a quiet air compressor for my garage

I have one that is horizontal (Porter Cable, 150 psi) and it has never let me down. When changing tyres, it works excellent with a torque wrench, and filling the tyres is a breeze. The only issue I had was a connection leak between the hose and the compressor, but that was due to me ripping out the ...

Re: Where Purchase Lathe Gouge Blades, w/o Handles?

I own this set and haven't experienced any issues apart from the usual headaches for beginners of trying to figure out how to sharpen them and what grinding to use on the gouge in the bowl. The steel appears to be of decent quality (holds the edge) as well as the handle is comfortable. I've turned a...

Re: 3D printer advice and recommendations

I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with the hardware currently in use (here to learn more about it, too) however, if you're worried about compatibility, this isn't a problem. There are many free solid modeling software programs available that can be used to design components. Most solid modeling progra...
