SS Universal Hold Down of Magna Vintage - How Common is it?

I recently acquired a complete boxed set of the SS Universal Hold Down parts made by Magna Power Tool Corporation. From the instruction booklet I can find a date of July 1957. Pictures of some of the parts can be found in Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone by Decristoforo (older version). I am impr...

I buy my 18 volt battery operated drills at HF. I've given up on the big brand names - tired of being ripped off on replacement batteries. My last brand name wanted $75 for a new battery. For that price you can get 4 drills at HF. When they go bad, change the battery design or voltage, in the trash ...

I had a question about the new castors I was wondering if someone could or would answer. When correctly installed and in the retracted position - does the height of the machine change? I didn't experience much, if any, change. Because the casters are a bigger diameter the structure that mounts the ...

I installed a set of the new (red) casters on my 78' and 81' SS 500s. They were easy to install and make moving the machines a joy. SS price on these casters is fair as I explored a number of sources for similar wheels and never found an exact match and most were more expensive.

Thanks Bill. I have a Delta lathe. It is a wood lathe fitted with compound slide rest and countershafted for slower rpms. But I've got no training as a machinest and the tolerances are not good enough for this level of work. I am interested in the work you are doing.

Thanks all for the additonal resources and insights. I use my SSs often for routing and shaping, and biscuit cutting which puts more lateral stresses on the shaft. I thought it best to have double bearings on both machines, especially the oldest one. I was suprised how good everything was on my 73' ...

Thanks joshh. I knew about the youtube video and had watched it and it enabled me to take the bearing out of my old quill. I didn't know about mkctools, so appreciate the source. I also didn't know the factory two bearing quill, which is what I have on my 82' SS 500, was a split shaft affair. Good t...
