Re: Hello from Wilmington NC

Welcome Scott! I'm a new Shopsmith owner as well. The first thing I did was wax what needed to be waxed, then followed this video for oiling the headstock (motor assembly). https://www.supco.com/web/supco_live/products/MO98.html Take things slow and do...

Re: Small Pieces - Kickback

I have to admit, when I first threw the switch on my Shopsmith saw I thought kickbacks were rare. I had no idea how important blade alignment, etc. was. In one video I watched, it was mentioned that table saws are only for square pieces of wood. Granted, it seems to me that an EXPERIENCED operator c...

Re: Small Pieces - Kickback

...The blank saw inserts can be homemade.... Thanks, I was wondering if both connector tube lengths wouldn't be redundant. But, I could see the merit in both. The saw inserts seem easy enough once you know what you're doing. I saw how rounding the corners could be done with the miter and rotating i...

Re: Small Pieces - Kickback

A crosscut sled sounds like an excellent idea. RFGuy had shared a video of one. It would give the workpiece and cutoff just a bit of nudge to clear the guard. Flipping the guard up is another approach mentioned. But, also mentioned was to gain a bit more experience. All very good suggestions. More e...

Re: Small Pieces - Kickback

RFGuy, thanks for the advice. Everyone has been real helpful. I've been digesting all the advice and videos. Eventually, a plan will come together. I've been going over the lessons in the manual. There's an abundance of good info in there. I also have the Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone book on ...

Re: Small Pieces - Kickback

...I am assuming this matters to you because you want to make additional cuts without stopping and restarting the saw in between each cut... It happened with the first cut. Until I get more experienced, I'll use the band saw for the small stuff. Wow! I've gotten some really great advice, and I trul...

Re: Small Pieces - Kickback

The Shopsmith is probably a Mark V 510 variant. It has tubes for mounting the fence. It has two extension tables, but did not come with the four 27" rods that would link tables. The S/N indicates 1996. I was not using the fence. I have a sliding miter with handle ( https://www.shopsmith.com/own...

Re: Small Pieces - Kickback

Thanks. I've put the ribbing knife on my list of parts to get in the future. Over lunch I'll be watching the video. I was working from the right hand side of the saw. The mesquite round got caught under the guard and started bouncing around. Of course, the power switch was on the left! Before I coul...

Small Pieces - Kickback

I'm a new owner of a Mark V Shopsmith. Having never used a table saw before, the first thing I did was try cutting some small pieces of wood. Small pieces like cutting a 1/2 inch of the end of a 2X4. Or slicing a half inch from a 2.5" dia. Mesquite limb. Sort of like a coaster for drinks. Once ...
