Re: Today in the Shop "Building a steam box"

Reible, You might try lining your box with foam board insulation. I've cured archery bow glue-ups in an "oven" made from plywood lined with 1" foil-faced expanded polystyrene (EPS?). Four 100W incandescent bulbs got a 7' x 2' x 1' box and a hefty plywood form up to 400 degrees in abou...

Re: Income Taxes - 2023

I think the withholding tables are deliberately low, but the IRS online calculator goes to the other extreme.

Re: Windows 11 Anonymity

I have TWO accounts for business, plus my personal Office365 account. The personal one stays on my personal machines only, but I quickly learned that frustrating things happen when I try to operate both work accounts on one Windows 11 laptop. Change my password in one, get locked out of the other. D...

Re: Quill Freeplay

The only operations I can think of where the user extends the quill significantly are drilling and morticing. I'm wondering about a couple of things: I'm not sure how to precisely measure whether my quill travels in a smooth path-- i.e. how much does it wobble as it extends. Secondly, and I wonder h...

Re: Quill Freeplay

Same here in terminology--total deflection is the sum of pushing downward on the spindle, then lifting up...and not being too aggressive. The .012 was at full quill extension and with no tightening of the quill lock. When the shop warms up, I'll go play some more.

Re: Shopsmith's new website is up....

David, I had to go look at my old "Quill Questions" post [not sure how to link back to that] where I said, ".012" play when unlocked" ...not 13. Sorry for the wild exaggeration 😂. But it did greatly improve by tightening the quill lock, then backing off just a little. The ch...

Re: Shopsmith's new website is up....

Yes, but that was at the quill. Mount up a chuck, toss in a long drill bit, and it begins to be challenging to hit the mark, say if you're lining up dowel holes. I learned to moderately tighten the quill lock--not so much as to prevent advancing the quill, but "almost tight."

Re: Shopsmith's new website is up....

Sorry--I'm going to perpetuate the side branch in this topic by one more comment about quill deflection. I may have been the newbie who got overly fixated on measuring runout after replacing my quill. My method of testing came about while setting up for horizontal boring. I inadvertently bumped the ...

Re: What have you purchased from Shopsmith recently?

My "when I grow up" comment was tongue-in-cheek. I grew up as a network admin, where I learned to apply PM skills. Then management believed I should be able to oversee teams of developers and DBAs doing mysterious software stuff. No heavy boxes to lift, no warehouse to inventory -- I just ...

Re: What have you purchased from Shopsmith recently?

Data migration stinks. Definitely not what I want to do when I grow up.
