Dusty- if you make the wood block longer so that it spans the whole table, you can use an adjustable toggle clamp on each end and clamp the block against the rails, instead of to the table top.

Dusty- I did not realize that you can choose multiple responses to one of these polls, so I just chose "use occasionally" without also choosing "I have one". That might explain why the numbers are not adding up.

The UTR sits on top of the carriage, not the way tubes. Is the 10ER carriage roughly the same size as the Mark V carriage? If so, it should work fine.

Yes, the "$149 value" can certainly be debated, depending on how much you value the time and materials involved in cutting the tube and figuring out your own design. It seems to me to be a great idea, though. I don't recall seeing any threads on this forum documenting mounting a headstock ...

Just guessing here, but the major cause of heat generation is friction from the belts, correct? Might the belt tension be a little too high?
