Well that explains how you were using a bearing puller! There are no set screws securing the spacer to the shaft. Are you attempting to pull one bearing at a time? My memory is failing me re direction to pull the bearings off the shaft. Lol! No, I've got to pull both at the same time]http://www.sho...

Are you guys talking about the screws holding the shaft assembly in the headstock, or are there more set screws attaching the spacer to the drive shaft? The shaft and bearings are out of the headstock and sitting on my bench. I've cleaned the spacer all the way down to bare aluminum and can't see an...

10E headstock bearing removal

I'm replacing the bearings in my 10E this week, and need to double check the removal process for the drive bearings(?). I've removed the shaft assembly and have removed the stepped pulley from the shaft. I'm trying to use a bearing puller to remove the two bearings and the spacer, all at the same ti...

I've been searching for the internet since Sunday. Here is the simplest solution I have found so far. However I can see a problem if the bench is to heavy to lift the end. Make mechanical advantage your advantage :) Here's a link to a shop-built mobile tool base. It uses a cam-shaped crank to lower...

Outstanding! Thank you for this. I'm just getting in to turning, and this will be a big help with the small ...

Shopsmith 10E Tailstock / Floating Center Question

In addition to my greenie, I've picked up a model 10E. The tailstock has a fixed-position #2MT. Later tailstocks (from the 10ER?) have a larger hole and a "Floating Center". Are these better than the original, or were they made this way to help cut costs? (Or both?) This If I can find a sp...

Ahhhh. Interesting idea. I'd think it would slip, but I guess there's not that much force on an object that size. Thanks for the clarification!

I agree with Terry and might add the Nova 10 piece (??) set that has live center and a variety of tips. I think I paid $50 so it is spendy, but I occasionally use two live bearings when turning really frustrating wood, that is prone to exploding chips  (maybe caused by operator error). I ...

I'd say to use the wolverine jig for sharpening. Ya get repeatability, spend more time turning, than sharpening. Go here to find a AAW turning club here, where ya can get a mentor to help ya learn. http://www.woodturner.org/community/chapters/LocalChapters.asp Nice! There are a couple more chapters...

.... And another thing: sharpening. I'm not bad when it comes to sharpening my hand tools (waterstones), but my grinder skills leave a little to be desired. Do I need a sharpening jig like the Wolverine or the one from PSI? How difficult is it to sharpen the gouges and fingernail profiles by hand?
