Re: Double tilt upgrade
The shims are placed against the SIDES of the tubes. The tube clamp exerts outward pressure to the tubes. The final position is determined by a small boss extending out from the outer interior surface of the end casting. The shims essentially make that boss longer. The shims are necessary since his...

Re: Oxygen Support
Please be ultra careful in the shop. That air hose can be a real hazard. I've been on oxygen support and I had a couple incidents that if in the shop could have been bad news.
ALWAYS CAUTIOUS, Please.

Re: Bow Xtender Fence
An idea that SS already has.... https://shopsmith.com/product/rip-fence-extension-package-for-mark-7-mark-v-520-mark-4/ Problem was price for me. IF SS would make it an option to compete price wise...it would make sense. All of my many SS toys would fit/work. Doc Yes, SS has incorporated...

Re: Do Std Shopsmith motors (the Emerson's) Come with Capacitors
I believe field windings (in the Shopsmith motors) can be tested with just an ohmeter but the armature is another story. I believe special equipment is required. The start windings must be given special attention.

Re: Quill coupler broken - where to source new part?
Hello, I did a stupid thing today, and broke the plastic coupler in the quill assembly of my SS Mark 5. The part in question is the white plastic piece in the picture. I can't seem to find a replacement on ebay or anywhere else. I also don't know if I'm calling it by the wrong name. There are whole...

Re: Quill coupler broken - where to source new part?
FWIW when my Greenie was still a Gilmer, the quill was silver not black, and the splines were coarser than those appear to be. And the coupler in the photo doesn't look like the one my Gilmer quill had It didn't look my Greenie sleeve either, but mine was totally worn out 40 years ago, I only recen...

Maybe it would be helpful for you to detail the test procedures that you advocate for this task. Then we would all be wiser.

Re: How do you really feel about the term "Smart Motor"?
I too do not care for the usage of smart motor when discussing other than the PowerPro. I really see no reason for why this is being done but it really causes no harm --- just possible confusion. Unfortunately, the persons who need to hear these thoughts are nost probably not listening to the member...

Re: Is the Smart Motor Speed Dial Ring, Back-Up Spring, part# 504196
I suspect that someone has pushed the "smart" word on Mr Cupps when talking about the PowerPro and that label has then been incorrectly applied to the other motors. We all know that the Mark V has only those smarts that the operator brings to it and sometimes that is doubtful.
