Re: Lathe Tool Rests ... What is This?
...For those wondering about the back side weakness inducing hole - who ever was responsible for tapping the OEM holes did not have long enough tooling(tap etc.) to reach the boss from the front side so they tapped it from the back thus requiring a larger hole. ...I would have drilled a plot hole f...

Re: Lathe Tool Rests ... What is This?
I don't enjoy those discovery type threads where someone pretends to have a problem to solicit feedback, then immediately post their unique solution to it. I agree with your sentiments. Actually, I was disappointed the new attachments I purchased were fashioned differently from the original that ca...

Re: Moxon Vice for Mark V
Now I’m just waiting for Rob’s hardware to arrive. (Also had a personal phone call from him thanking for the business, a real nice touch) He called me too!! Completely unexpected but very welcomed. The springs compress down to a final span of 1". You will need to countersink this amount into o...

Re: Moxon Vice for Mark V
Thank you - I was wondering if you had utilized the shopsmith bracket for the extension table (shown below). Is there a reason you opted for an epoxy joint, perhaps the width of one jaw of the vice isn't wide enough to accommodate these brackets? I just didn't think of it !! :o Now that you suggest...

Re: Lathe Tool Rests ... What is This?
Could the material have wrapped further around, strengthening the known weak spot of the hole opposite the original setscrew? Of course. Thanks for reminding me. I will plug that hole with Steel Stick. I know this will work b/c I have used Steel Stick to modify a chain saw bar so it will fit a diff...

Re: Lathe Tool Rests ... What is This?
Here are the steps. I attached the Disk Sander to the accessory quill shaft which I will explain below. I then lifted the SS into the drill press position and chucked a size F metal drill bit. For a 5/16 x 18 tap into aluminum, charts indicate size F is correct. Remove the original set screw from th...

Re: Lathe Tool Rests ... What is This?
I'm interested in the "how-to" for this, especially the material you used to build up the casting. - David David: Thanks for your interest. Have you noticed that the original set screw on the 510 tool rest travels through a reinforced section of the casting for about 3/4"? (the green...

Re: Lathe Tool Rests ... What is This?
Thanks to everyone for your interest. Here is the latest update on my tool rest modification. I was digging around in my parts drawer and came across my Rockler Jig Hardware Kit which contained various 5/16 x 18 star knobs and T-bolts. I swapped out all the lever screws with star knobs. WithStarKnob...
