If you have ever tried to remove the screws holding the blades in a SS jointer or planer (I have) there is no need for "lock" washers. The screws are tight as He**.

I should have mention the headstock slides easier now, and that before, the headstock moved with some difficulty depending on where it was along the way tubes.

Short of removing them and rolling them across a relatively flat and level plane, I'm going to assume they aren't in perfect plane. That still leaves the issues of the lift assist applying uneven pressure, and difficulty getting the tubes trued up so the stay level in the down position. I'm going to ...

ok, split lock washers. AKA spring washers. The machine is a 510, but the manual shows a special #10. No need for argument. If it works without a washer, then i'll re-install it that way.

Yes; across the tubes. The middle was farther out of level than the ends. rotating the tubes helped, As stated, getting the tubes to rest evenly is pretty hard with that lift assist

The manual I have shows washers, which is how I arrived at the question asked. I have read where some have installed spring washers there in place of the special ones

I've been experiencing similar problem on a recently acquired 510. The way tubes are horribly misaligned. I place the machine in level, finding the lower crossbars level too, I then placed the level in various spots along the way tubes and found them unlevel. First off, I'll say I don't have the ...

Jointer Parts Info Needed

I acquired a second shopsmith a while back, and while sharpening the knives, I discovered there were no washers in the wedges with the screws. The maintenance section of the manual calls for a "number 10 "special" washer. Can I get those locally? What's so "special" about it?
