googling "crescent moon shelf" gives many similar images, with titles having things like "1950's" in them. They look very similar to what your brother has there.

Adding a charge to pay for advertising of the product is not a new idea.

ShopSmith includes their advertising costs in the prices of their products. You, as the consumer, are paying for their advertising.
