A stroboscopic disk is patterned so when a given speed is attained and it is subject to a given frequency of light (Hz) the marks on its surface appear immobile. The traditional stroboscopic markings that surrounded the record turntable were dimensioned so they appeared immobile as the turntable tur...

What is the speed of your Shopsmith?
I was always intrigued about the speed of my Mark V at the different Letter settings. (Yes I know that the speeds appear in a table in the PTWFE for 50 Hz and I can find the rest throughout the book, but how can I be sure?) So I built a stroboscope to attach to the SS and read given speeds as I incr...

Chuck, Although I did not explicitly mention this in my posting or sketch, the way tubes should be locked in an upright position. I concur with you that the adjusting knob is in no way a secure way to do this. Since the idea sprung from using an old SS Mark V to simply act as a support of the OPR, r...

I assume that the bars of all Mark V models are interchangeable. If you cut the bars (shorten them) when you instal the OPR the lack of weight will render the setup unstable. If this setup is the primary reason for purchasing an older model of Mark V and the lower bars are shortened (not the top one...

Jigsaw Parts and exploded view
I picked up a jigsaw accessory as part of the Mark V 500 I purchased last week and having a moment I want to get it going. It is stiff out of lack of use and probably needs some lubrication and calibration (alignment of the bracket for sure), but I don't want to open it up till I have a grasp on wha...

Mini Mark V
I found a Mark V (500) for sale with one accessory (Jigsaw) at a reasonable price (all the equipment for half the price of a power station). My idea is to shorten the bench and way tubes and create a short version of the Mark V to power the accessories I have freeing my Mark V (510) for other work. ...

Edflorence, I can understand you comments but the reality you mention is not true across the nation and less still abroad. At least not here in BC. Economics force families to consider two incomes and smaller families in line with income budgets. Interest in woodworking might be still comparable to ...

Price is an issue to every one of us (read the opted purchases of members of this list of competitive brands) and most probably more so to any newcomer to the clan. As I reflect on the accurate comments of Jerry and Charlese I cannot help but think of the days when I was the production manager of a ...

8iowa, Thanks for sharing the difference between these two types of motors. It is knowledge like this that we should consider when purchasing any tools for our work, specially if the characteristics of one or the other have any bearing on our demands. Though the technical aspects presented are not o...
