I plan on getting a live center eventualy. I already had the dead center So I'll use it for the time being. I still need to get a tool rest and tools. For turning the pen blanks can you do that with the normal centers or do you need that screw center that SS offers? I'm just wanting to learn how so ...

New to the Lathe What should I watch out for?

I recently got a 1954 SS. It is in great shape (after a little cleanup and paint) Anyway I've never used a Lathe yet. I'm collecting peices to use the lathe. Right now I have the SS of course. I picked up a tailstock with a dead center. I also have a drive center I need to pick up today. I still hav...

thanks,

I forgot they were in the background. The Jeep fender is visable too. The boat rarely gets used as we have a bigger one for the family. I think it is cool you redo them. I used the hammered paint on the jigsaw arm. It looks nice. I couldn't find it in green though.

I agree I have two older vehicles that are restored (1965 Pontiac GTO and a 1978 Jeep CJ5) I love the history behind these thing I have some refinished furniture as well.
Sure newer is flashiy and pretty but restored is prettier to me.

Ok I've got a little ways on restoring My 1954 SS. I thought bout painting it the newer color but decided just to try to match it to what it was supposed to be (green) I found a pretty decent match as you'l see. The first picture is the picture of it from the person I bought it from. Notice the rust...

Ok I guess no one restores the old green ones. Well in case someone does decide to I found a paint that VERY closely matched the green paint. It is Rustoleum Satin "Spruce Green" I'll post some pics when I'm done painting. Some one had primered the legs on this shopsmith and it was bugging...

Restoring Older Shopsmiths

I recently bought a SS that turned out to be a 1954 SS. It works great. But it doesn't look the best. It is the green one and I would love to resore it to the way I know it can look. Anyone have a good resource fot the correct paint and/or ideas on how to fix it up right?

Thanks,
Jason

charlese,

Thanks for the info. I was going to start a new thread eventualy. I've just been realy busy. I can really see I'll like this machine. It is amazing to me that it is 53 years old and works well. And it amazes me the design hasn't changed that much.

I just got mine yesterday. A 1954 model. Works great. I got it for $150. Couldn't pass it up. It hasn't been used in years. I'm going to go through it and oil it and do any mantenence before using it much. I think I need to set the speed controll up right (calibrate it?) But I'm very happy for the p...
