Re: Guitar Resto-Mod underway

Thanks! Here are more "exploded" steps toward a convergence in the future: The neck is now glued up from the stock blocks; at the far right end a piece has been cut at an angle and re-joined as a "scarf joint" to put the final cant on the tuning end of things: IMG_7351.jpeg For t...

Re: Guitar Resto-Mod underway

Following up with the custom router-guide described earlier this week, I channeled out the full perimeters of the guitar faces. As you can see, the interior kerfing strips are really holding the body together at this point. The removed material will be replaced with decorative + structural curved bi...

Re: Guitar Resto-Mod underway

Continuing on to some tedious detail work... The adapted hand-cutter I used 2 years ago is still with me. It was pretty cool for soft mahogany and spruce and walnut in those days... IMG_5524.jpeg But, it is not really going to hold up for hard oak on the new guitar. So, after thinking about it all w...

Re: Guitar Resto-Mod underway

If you're asking about the yellow areas, it's gaps (for respective back braces) which are letting a lot of light through from a work lamp. After refining, the gaps get smaller, and also backed up with kerf strips. Then the edge will get routed away and replaced with some binding in the future.

Re: Guitar Resto-Mod underway

Just a bit more work to report lately: Once the top and bottom boards became slightly "convex" via bracing, inspection shows it threw off the formerly good fit of the sides. I will progressively shave the sides until the air gaps all around the perimeter become uniform and vanish: IMG_7296...

Re: Guitar Resto-Mod underway

Well, the little pinhole scrap pieces maybe worked a little for the Eclipse viewing, but the dark special glasses were better. Here were 2 pictures about 12 minutes apart in high daylight, Indianapolis area: IMG_7274.jpeg IMG_7279.jpeg I didn't show this in build #1 of the thread, but all the bracin...

It's mind-bending! Pinholes! Halos! :D  :)
A few moments in the shop before the Eclipse mania gets underway here:

Thanks! Actually it's an ECE Emmerich plane that I had got used. It was very beat-up, so I dressed it up by laying thin strips of holm oak into the sides. Similarly, the decorative button is turned from holm oak.

Re: Guitar Resto-Mod underway

Well, 2 years later -- I've liked that resto-mod, but I got the itch to make a guitar from scratch.

Some random points of progress (red oak rift sawn wood for the sides and back)....

Re: Adding indexer to Shorty for bowl inlay work

That's very nice! I can well imagine the interlocked grain on that bowl is hard to get smooth.
Nice insertion of the 6 "Infinity Stones"! :)
