Hi all, Almost there... I have all the slats screwed on the front shelves in with sheetrock screws: I haven't put a whole bunch of stuff on them yet, as I need to spend some time thinking what qualifies as "occasional use" stuff where I don't mind pulling a car out of...

Hi all, I switched to drilling out the pilot holes with a bit sized exactly to the inner diameter of the threaded shaft. I learned that if you drill a pilot hole and you smell sap, or if the drill bit works to drill the hole, it's best to clean the hole out real good and use a bit more lube on the l...

I've read that since nitrogen molecules are much larger, they do not leak out and the tire maintains its desired pressure longer - thus indirectly leading to better mileage due to less pressure drop.

Another lesson learned - if the drill bit goes into the joist tightly while drilling the pilot hole, take the time to ream the hole out real good with the bit. Otherwise you stand a (very) good chance of snapping the lag bolt. Only one snapped in 18 bolts so far, I guess that's not too bad. Anyway, ...

Hi beeg, I think that is a great idea! It's not something I need to do right away. However, despite all my careful planning, I've found that I am exactly one slat short. (How did that happen??) So, it looks like I'll need to get the router and the polyurethane out and make one more. And if I do that...

You could also try electrolytic rust removal (Google for it) although that may be more trouble than it's worth for such a small piece.

Hi Chuck, The issue of Workbench they refer to is the one that gave me this idea! Of course, they use long wood screws to attach the shelving to the ceiling and I'm using lag bolts. They use screws to join the dado joints, and I use screws, glue and mending plates. I'm overdesigning a bit from the o...

While the polyurethane on the second set was drying, I got the Shopsmith set up to drill the countersunk screw holes. Here's the configuration I used: I used the rip fence itself as the horizontal stop, and the fence-mounted stop as a depth stop. The holes are 3/4" from th...
