My experience with this is limited. I've bought a few plans here and there and made just enough items to break even with the costs before I got bored with the project.
Also, I don't consider any "work" project, as opposed to a "fun" project, in the shop at anything less that double my hourly rate ...

Metal detector
I agree that any detector that is rated to read 2"deep in wood should be great for pallets. Of course the only fool proof metal detector I have found for use inside wood is a bandsaw, finds those hidden inclusions every time.
