Outboard turning?

Has anyone tried outboard turning on their shopsmith?

If so, can you tell me about your setup? what are you using for a tool rest/tool rest support?

I have maxed out the swing of the lathe and have a few larger pieces i would rather not cut down if i could turn a larger bowl.

You guys are so great! I jumped to worrying that the motor was done for. Opened her up last night and after removing the belt, I lowered the bottom piece holding the motor, gave everything a good dusting/cleaning. She's alive again! I couldnt be more relieved. I was going to start lubricate all the ...

1) don't turn it on until:

2) you remove the drive belt from the motor

Then and only then, try turning it back on (quickly, on/off), and see if the motor runs.

Noted. I will remove the belt before anything else :)

Help diagnosing my problem

Hey guys, I need some help. I have been using my shopsmith almost daily for the last few months with no issues. Tonight I was using the lathe and everything was going fine. I turned it off to go sharpen my gouge. Now when I flick the switch to start her up, it just hums for a few seconds then trips ...

Thanks everyone. Reible, youre right, there are ways around a chuck...unfortunately the only lathe piece I have is a small faceplate and the cup center (non bearing one). I have made a glue block before when turning my bowl but will look again at the shopsmith bible for other ways to fashion my own ...

That particular 4 jaw chuck you listed is NOT a self centering design. IMHO, a chuck is not something to scrimp on. Other things to factor on a lathe chuck, availability of additional jaws for holding things (Nobody does this better than Nova IMHO), runout of the chuck while mounted, Grip strength ...

You probably want a four-jaw chuck. That being said, let me recommend the Hurricane Chuck, fairly new on the market. I have the big one, but the smaller one is probably more suited. I find them almost on a par with my Oneway brand chuck, but half the price. You will need an insert and an adaptor, b...
