As for sharpening, what I have been doing, and actually did each tool this afternoon, was honing them by hand. I have a nice oil stone, and when I start turning I go ahead and clamp it to my work bench and oil it up. it is not a problem with the steel in the SS turning tools, but I have been told t...

lots of good info already posted. I will just mention a few things that I did not see above. the latest (version 3) Woodriver planes from Woodcraft are getting good reviews (even from the Schwartz). they are made in China but they are done to high-end specs and QA. they are essentially the old Bedro...

I would add a suggestion to check out Neal Addy's website on getting started in woodturning: http://www.nealaddy.org/node/39 I would also suggest going to the American Assoc of Woodturners website to find a local chapter. these clubs are a great resource for information and mentoring": http://w...

I got introduced to the Colt 5 star drill bits http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2080206/28237/Colt-5-Star-Pen-Makers-Bit-7mm.aspx in a pen turning class. the difference is amazing. also, to test the plumb-ness of the drill chuck to the table, you can take a stiff piece of wire (like a section of wir...

Neal Addy has an excellent web site for woodturning at http://www.nealaddy.org/node/11 the MarkV is included in his wood lathe specifications list. the getting started turning section is excellent. I am not skilled enough to comment on his photographing your work section. I mention it for those who ...
