I decided not to do an underlayment. The frame below forms an "8" as it has a center runner. So most of the wood is within about 6 inches of a support. The top is 3" thick which gives me a lot of glue surface area between the blocks.

@ Charlese: No, I bought the legs pre-turned from www.osbornewood.com . They were a little too large for me to try & I've not done much turning.

JPG: To attach the top to the frame I drilled 4 of the 1/2 inch holes in the base. I had some small metal plates with a hole in the middle in the junk box ...

Butcher Block Kitchen Island

I just finished an end-grain butcher block center island for the house.
It certainly was one of the more challenging projects that i've done,mostly due to size of top (gluing/clamping capacity) and precision needed to get everything perfectly square. Finished project is 36w x 25d.
