Speed is not really gonna help you but it should be turning fast. especially if you doin a pen. More important is the sharpness and cutting action. I've looked at those bowl core systems and never could spend the money. That first one I think I can make. Yes it could catch and give you trouble but that's part of the "lathe game" LOL It's ALL dangerous if used wrong or put in a bind.

Well I 've always said the best wood is the wood you have in front of you for free. For practice I think it's important to work with green wood.
