wHY DO YOU THINK THE CAP IS BAD?

HAVE YOU VERIFIED THE START SWITCH IS MADE?

DOUBLE CHECK THE DIRECTION SWITCH CONTACTS ABS WIRING ARE CORRECT.

CAPACITORS RARELY GO BAD.

Manual biasing the table may create more repeatable results, but it contaminates the process.

Let us establish some facts re the gauge. IIUC the pix with the gauge indicating about "57" with the small dial indicating a negative reading is the at rest, fully extended plunger. The "zero" pix is with the small dial indicating close to "1". The plunger is pushed in ...

If you are primarily interested in turning, any of them will do. A model 10 with speed changer would top my list followed by a Mark 5(==Mark V 500) then a 505(510 less float tables etc. . . .

If considering a new purchase, consider the recently added stripped down version.

Avoid clones.

UMMV, but I NEVER experienced a DOS crash. Now thingies running under DOS, that is another universe.

If multi tasking, one had better have absolute memory management control!!!
