Outstanding! Thanks everyone - I truly appreciate your ideas. I've invested almost two years in this project and will be giving the rod to my brother this spring, Lord willing. I'm tempted to try some (or all) of these ideas, but for safety I'm thinking a wood sleeve glued over metal components woul...

Questions: Using wood to preform a nickel-silver job
I'm wondering how functional and durable these "cap and ring" components - typically constructed of nickel silver - would be if they were made from wood. Would they adequately preform the task of holding a fly fishing reel to the reel seat? Would they last 50 years? What woods would you re...

Mortised Reel Seat
Forgive my ignorance here, but I'm nearing completion on a bamboo fly fishing rod and I don't know the best way to create the mortise on a real seat I turned with my ShopSmith. Can someone help me out? Here is what I'm going for... (The mortise is used to accept the real foot - one end of the reel f...

Fair price for a garage sale Mark 10
Hey all,
Quick question. A friend just called from a garage sale with a Mark 10. It appears to be in good shape. Owner says it's from the 1950's. He's asking $450.
My friend wants to know if that's a fair price, and as a Mark V owner, I have no idea.
Any thoughts?

Thanks for the replies - very helpful to find another thread on the same topic! I'm going to do a little more research/application and will update this thread when I know more. Charlese, in the other thread you mention a Sawdust video that I couldn't find. Do you happen to remember which one it was?...

Question on creating 60 Angles
I hand make fly rods out of bamboo and have a question for you guys. Currently I take a round culm of bamboo, split it into roughly 5' long strips that are approximately 1/4" wide. I then hand plane those 1/4" wide strips on two sides to create an equilateral triangle. Does anyone know how...
