Wood Turning on a Shopsmith

I use my shopsmith primarily as a wood lathe. I find it impossible to turn large pieces even long pieces because the quill does not turn true enough. Small bowls only 3 inches deep are fine but if I get even 6 inches out from the faceplate then it wobbles. Drill bits will only spin true at high spee...

SS 500 Repair

Thanks a bunch Dusty. I can't believe it's that easy. This is a no brainer. Any idea how hard it is to replace the Poly V belt? I figure that has never been done to my machine and with it's age should be. Once again thanks.

parting chisel

You didn't ruin the tool. Just resharpen it on your sharpner and you will be fine. Anytime you get a tool so hot it turns blue just grind away the blue and you will be back to SS steel and ready to go as long as your tool is sharp. The parting tool gets the hottest of any lathe chisel. Happens to me...

SS 500 Repair myself or send it off

Hey Guys, here is my dilemma. I bent my driveshaft/quill trying to turn a bowl that was too large and maybe my gouge wasn’t sharp enough. 14” diameter 6” thick pecan blank that was hard as nails. It looks like I can send it off to the guy on eBay and end up paying $350 for a tune up and new shaft/qu...

Thanks

Hey Guys thanks for the info. I was worried that the bouncing had bent my spindle. I will melt the wax off the set screw and see it that is the problem with the play. I think Ed had it right. 1/3 of this particular blank is of the light walnut sap wood which would make it not turn true. I have it ro...

Out of center bowl blanks

Hello All, I've had my ShopSmith for 4 months and use it primarily to turn wooden bowls. I have completed 5 or 6 but my 7th and 8th would not true up? The vibrations were so bad that it bounced the machine across the floor. My spindle has a little play in it 1/3 of an inch. Do you think that is my p...
