Finally had the time to smooth out the shaft that the speed control fits on with the set screw. After doing that I opened, drilled the speed control lever hole where you have to get at the set screw and made it just a little bit bigger. Then I took my Dremel and made the hole look more like it was i...

If the loose set screw has boogered the shaft, ya might consider cleaning that up with a file

I know now that I have the speed control lever off that it was slipping because I looked at the 1 o'clock position to get the lever off and the actual divit or place where the set screw goes is at about 4 o'clock. So I don't know where I should set the ring with the words on it like saw sander etc t...

Thanks I now got he control arm off. I noticed as I was taking it off, before I loosened the set screw that the set screw was loose and allowed me to put it a bit out. So I now have the speed control lever off and the gears inside look good. So I am wondering if it was just a loose set screw that al...

Is there a way for me to take the speed control off so I can see what is happening? The speed control turns clockwise and counterclockwise just fine but as it is doing it the big ring with the writing and letters on it will turn when I have reached the speed I want. I can hand turn the ring with the...

Speed control outer ring turning on it own

While I was checking to see if the new quill bearing was going to quiet my machine, and it did, I was turning my old greenie speed control knob when I noticed that the outer ring, the ring that says A, B, C D etc. was rotating on it own clockwise. Once I had the machine up to warp speed I was able t...

Well I replaced the bearing. I, of course, was tighting up the quill so the string wouldn't unwind. My hand slipped off the large "wing nut" and the handle quickly went completely back to where it was before I started this process and the quill fell out into my other hand. Proceeding along...

I lubed everything last night and my machine does sound better but something is still making a noise. I called Shopsmith today and got a lady in the tech. department who told me how to check to see if it was the quill bearing that needed to be replaced. She had me pull on the spindle to see if I cou...

I have an old 55 ot 56 green Shopsmith., I am the second owner and have had it since about 1973. When I bought it the Gilmer belt was broke and I needed to replace it and I did. The saw has worked well but now I am getting a squeel when the motor is running and a sort of a grinding sound when I turn...

Thanks everyone. What a nice welcome and help with my questions. I had wondered about putting a sled under what I was trying to thickness but I wasn't sure what to hold it with. Carpet tape was a great suggestion. Thanks for the plans for building a thickness planer and for the thought that if I had...
