Mine is lubed and waxed, so I don't worry about rain damaging the way tunes or anything that doesn't have electricity flowing at some point in its life. my local woodcraft is ok on the prices, but looking around a little i found a great local lumber supply place, they have boards and turning blanks, and on average are around 1/2 woodcrafts prices.

you might check around a bit and see if you can find something similare

Could be wrong, but my understanding is, that running it back to slow is something you do when you are walking away from the SS for the day. You dont need to change its speed between cuts, unless your are switching function and the speed is different.
