thanks guys.I salvaged the legs from one of the barns i was tearing down.I'm not sure what they were originally used for.

yes,fine screws for hardwood [forgot that one]and spend the little extra to get the correct flat washer type screws.The cone shaped headed screws cause splitting too.I would still pre-drill the first piece for each joint.

I use pocket screws a lot. Pre-drilling to about 3/4 of the full length helps and almost eliminates splits for me.i use a lot of reclaimed soft wood that is very brittle.Grain orientation also has to be watch on many joints.

your location will come into play pertaining to price.I was able to find a 510 with bandsaw, jointer. belt sander,dust collector,scroll saw,speed reducer, and usual accs. for under $1500 here in WNY.
