Re: Lousy jointer technique or maybe I just don't get it?

I would (and have) clamp the bowed piece on a long sled and run one side through the tablesaw. Having that one side flat, press it up against the fence of the jointer (after having squared it up). Now you have squared one edge ready for the planer and saw to square up the piece.

Re: Comparison dovetail hand saw - cut results

Actually, the Veritas dovetail saw is a 'pull'saw. The spine is attached to the blade at the front end, so any pushing at the handle is pulling on the blade.

Personally, I would judge the surface left, and could not care less about the shavings. I hear there are contests to see who can make the longest, thinnest, widest and most consistent shaving. Life is too short. There, I'm done now.

Plus down time!

'Down time' is less than 2 minutes... once you get over the shock of NOT losing your fingers, and having WAY MORE costs than $69. Even with Canadian 'socialised medicine', that is cheap.

Fettling

I have been incredibly lucky with CL finds of old planes for little money, and have restored many to working condition... to the level that this year I am going to start making my own. By the way, did you know that the process of setting up a plane to cut true and properly is called 'fettling'? So, ...
