Re: Pro Planer speed control box problem
I'm back and I owe everybody an update on my potentiometer shaft repair. The NOS potentiometer I ordered showed up and I immediately realized it wouldn't work. The shaft is too short. It was the right style of potentiometer, but the shaft was so short it was hardly any longer than the broken origina...

Re: Pro Planer speed control box problem
............ Since then I have used the planer heavily and it still works just fine. I have run thousands of linear feet through the planer and haven't had a single hiccup. tdubnik, Thank you for the update. :) I was wondering how it all worked out and there is nothing better than actual testing wi...

Re: Pro Planer speed control box problem
Alright, I did some research and made some measurements. The Bridge Rectifier in my control box is labeled: GI KBPC04 This is an old part and I think I found a pair of older scans of the data sheet here: http://www.datasheetarchive.com/dlmain/Databooks-5/Document53013.pdf http://www.datasheetarchive...

Re: Pro Planer speed control box problem
Longer answer: No, the control box is not a variable resistor in series with the DC motor. Technically, its not even a light dimmer in series with a rectifier that is connected to a brush type motor. Its a triac controller circuit that has extra snubbing added to guarantee proper turn off of the tri...

Re: Pro Planer speed control box problem
Determine the resistance 'taper' of the original so As to match that 'detail'. Taper = shaft(knob) position vs resistance % of total resistance. My speed control potentiometer is linear taper, the half way point is 50% of total resistance. I would have been surprised if it wasn't, but its a good po...

Re: Pro Planer speed control box problem
Better late than never :) I read all 106 posts in this thread and didn't see a circuit diagram for the feed motor speed controller. I recently purchased a used 1983 M5990 planer that had its control knob broken off (among other small problems). http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac198/ghost_mutant/T...

Re: Determining Pro Planner Age
Ha,I see nobody jumped in here to correct my last post :) I'm tempted to delete my above post in this thread as I no longer believe it belongs here. But I'll make a quick correction instead to prevent anybody else from making my mistake in the future. I don't have a 'Pro' planer. Instead I'm the new...

Re: Determining Pro Planner Age
I just picked up my first Pro Planer yesterday. Thankfully I was the first responder to the ad this time around. My new tool is a model M5990 with Ser 09094. The planer has the round table adjustment wheel/crank with the moveable setting dial in the center. It also has been upgraded with new pulley ...

If it is by the case, then perhaps this would be a good buy to use in the old jigsaw crankcase? Which oil do you recommend for using in the old jigsaw? I have one in the attic awaiting restoration. I think I'll work on it after I'm finished with the scroll saw since I do have the assorted die files ...
