Re: Feedback on idea for a planer stand

Thanks - That's such a coincidence: I logged into my computer specifically to go order brushes from them, though for a porter cable router. Will be my first order from them. That and a couple bearings and loctite 680 from Amazon and it should be good to go. I had it all in shopping carts on the site...

Re: Feedback on idea for a planer stand

A quick aside: I've used a newer makita lunchbox planer a bit recently. While it runs well, it sure makes me glad for the ss planer one piece table. The stamped fold down wings aren't even flat, each has a significant bow. I couldn't believe the tiny strips of steel that made up the knives, but they...

Re: Feedback on idea for a planer stand

Ha, I admit I never came close to thinking about the backlash, and that is quite insightful. OK, now it may be about to get silly, but humor me ;) Maybe JPG's answer contains a clue to a solution: what if I use gas springs strong enough to preload it back the right way? I'd have to fasten the table ...

Feedback on idea for a planer stand

I adore my Shopsmith planer. However, I am not keen on a few things: the pricey knives (oh well, I'll just avoid nails), the need to lift it on and off, and the hassle of using any indeed and outfeed things. Well, I tried supporting it by the underside of the table instead, just on blocks to test. I...

Re: New Shop Smith owner

I know there are also degrees of stainless as well, but I didn't know about the steel contact issue. Oh, I know why I didn't think to worry: is seen warnings about using stainless as the sacrificial anode... I just had a seriousfailure of imagination and didn't think about stainless on the other end...

Re: New Shop Smith owner

Wow, I didn't consider that with the tubes. I just assumed something along the lines of 'they're rusty, so they aren't stainless, so they're fine.' I've long assumed the warning was accurate. I still plan to act as if it is, and only bring this up as a point of interest that perhaps someone with dom...

Re: New Shop Smith owner

You really can do anything you need on these machines with the help here. I started not having ever seen one in person until I bought mine and have now taken the whole main unit, bandsaw, and jointer, plus a second mk V and now a 10er apart down to the last bolt and bearing with the exception of the...

Re: Any new use for old bandsaw table?

I sure do, mine is BENT. The cast iron. Seriously. Took me quite a few cuts to figure out why they were always off. I thought blade wander, user error, finally realized someone very heavy jumped on the near edge. Makes it hard to cut a 90 degree side when it bends down on the near side of the blade....

Re: CNC Machine?

I recently joined a makerspace - not middle school in this case - and have been reading a bit here and there about cnc (I'm there primarily for the woodshop). I gather that a school may be able to get a machine at a steep discount, or just possibly donated by company that makes them. It is worth loo...

Re: My take on an under-Shopsmith storage cabinet

Thanks. How do you find having drawers like that? I know myself... Without making some provision for defining what tool fits where I end up piling them on top of each other, with the one I next need at the bottom of the tallest, most precarious pile... I think the same underlying basic natural law e...
