I was 28 when I purchased my Shopsmith, in 1974. I'll be 65 in a couple on months. Still using the same machine. I have added a 1956 cut down to a mini last year.
I was using my neighbors, Shopsmith when I was a teenager.

You can get a 1 1/4" arbor blade from Forrest.
A quality sharpening service can usually bore the arbor out to 1 1/4".

I believe the 'red' wire is for the start windings. When the motorstarts, the capacitor gets charged, the voltage causes the potential (start) relay to open, causing the start windings to be out of the circuit. this usually happens in less than a second. The start windings are just as named, to get ...

I use a forty tooth "Forrest woodworker II". I think it's the best blade I've ever used.
For about eleven bucks Forrest will bore it out to an inch and a quarter to fit a shopsmith arbor, or use it with the 5/8" arbor.

I use a "Sorby" sanding disc, I got from woodcraft.
I use it with a Harbor Freight pnuematic angle grinder.
I've gotten great results with it.
